Well in May 2008 i will be taking part in my first ever 3DE. And i dont really have a clue on what work to do with my boy to get him fit enough to compete as it is my first time doing something as intense as this!

Could you maybe give me some pointers as to what to do to get him ready. I cant believe its only 5 months away.

Well im having to go in the school in the evenings due to it being dark when i get home from work. He seems to be getting bored with flat work so last night i done some trot and canter polls out to keep his brain a bit active.

I try to ride 3-4 times in the week in the school (weather depending) and both days at the weekend when I try to go for a long hack.

He must be reasonably fit already then as he's being ridden 5/6 times a week. I would just try to increase the length of the schooling sessions from about February time and keep him in consistant work as he is already. Good idea to have poles etc out as you want him to keep interested.
About 6 weeks from the event I would increase his fast work ie faster canters on hacks, this can also be done in the school (size depending!!) I do alot of interval training, this is really good for fitness. Start with 3 minutes of cantering with bursts of speed, then walk for 2 minutes to let him get his breath back. You can increase this to 4 mins with 1 min recovery and you will find that his recovery time will get much shorter.
The steeplechase time can be easily made by a horse of his build (if he's the one in your sig?) if you just keep a strong fast pace the whole way around- you dont need to go at breakneck speed like some do!
It has become a bit easier on the horses as they have made phase C ( the 2nd phase of roads and tracks, after the steeplchase) alot slower, giving them more time to recover. Then of course you get the 10 min box to get your own breath back!
Is it at Milton Keynes? I've done that lots of times and its brilliant fun! Good Luck

make sure you change your boots or bandages used for x/c part
as they can constrict when wet if left on-- so always take off and dry the legs as best as you can and apply clean boots or bandages
then you wont get white marks or pressure marks lumps or sores

Probably not going this year as I've done it a few times now. You'll have such a great time though. If you want to know anything about it just PM me x
