I had an accident last week (completely unrelated to this problem - fell off another horse). Anyway, I hurt my hip quite bad and had problems walking around, but feel a bit better now. Am still awaiting x ray results. Basically, I decided to barve riding my mare yesterday. She was good and we had a little walk and trot. It felt very uncomfortable for me though, I felt lopsided and as though I was higher on one side if you get my meaning. Anyway I aksed her to do some serpentines and changes of rein and she went a bit funny. She napped every time I asked her to turn or do anything on the left side. She doesn't normally do this, and I got the feeling she was trying to tell me something. I got off and didn't ask her again. Now I'm torn between two thoughts here. Could she be very sore on her left side or through her shoulder? We have no winter turnout here and so I wonder if she might be stiff, particularly after a week off. Or is it more likely me ? I think she may have got a shock if I was riding her in a different way because of my hip? Feel a bit upset , as I don't want to hurt her, but feel she needs a ride as she's getting bored in stable. Should I get physio? Very confused any thoughts great.

Could you ask anyone else to ride her to see if they get the same reaction? Or could you lunge her and see if there are any obvious problems or stiffnesses?

Sounds to me like she was confused. If you have lost strength even to a small degree she was probably wondering what you wanted from her, seeing as you would effectively been asking her in a different way than normal. Yes sounds like you could probably do with physio- i had an accident 3 years ago where i sustained a minor (was minor at the time) injury to my shoulder and i've only just bit the bullet and gone for physio as it's been really bad recently- turns out that is was not such a minor injury and i should have had physio immediately in the first place.

Can you do some ground work if you feel she needs working? Long reining, lunging, free schooling?

hope you feel better soon

wait for your Xray results before you decide on physio..when I came off I broke my hip..two years later still not right and significantly weaker on my right side, that alone could have affected your horse

It's probably because of your injury. I've done something to my back and haven't ridden for 2 weeks. I got fed up on Sunday and decided to ride anyway. I couldnt do a half decent circle and when I tried to change the rein across the diagonal I ended up doing shoulder in down the longside. This horse is getting 70% mark at novice and was fine when my trainer rode him the day before so just put it down to me not being able to sit right.

TBH it sounds like it's you, if I don't sit completely balanced on my horse ( i have a tendancy to twist) she will not bend properly for me. You really need to wait to see what your Xray says so you don't do yourself any permanent damage. Hope you get better soon.
