What would your recommendation be for putting weight ON a horse that is prone to laminitis? Been looking at what the different feed companies have to offer in the high fiber/low starch/low sugar range, but wanted to get some thoughts from people who aren't affiliated with them. :) Thanks in advance! Oh, and it's a 13 year old Welsh sec B if that matters.

What feed is the pony on at the moment? Has she had more than one laminitic attack? What sort of condition is she in at the moment - are you able to see her ribs? What is she getting in the way of hay/haylage/grazing?

If she needs more condition than ad lib hay or haylage can provide then I'd give her either Simple Systems feed (after talking to them to see which they recommend) or an unmolassed chaff and low calorie balancer.

PS - I do mention Simple Systems feed in my replies a lot. I also mention Top Spec a lot. Because these are products I use for my own horses, not because of stealth marketing!!! TGM you need to consider that people recommend stuff which works well for their equines, lots of us on here are owners not traders!

ISHmad - I am sure out of your 3000+ posts, only a small proportion of them mention Top Spec or Simple Systems (in fact a quick glance through your latest posts shows you post on all sorts of subjects, from rugging to bridleways). So you definitely don't fall into the category of "promoting the same products in ALMOST EVERY POST they make!" My sig message refers to the posters of whom recommendations for a specific product or service form about 75% or more of their posts! (The less clever ones have 100% of their posts about the same products, but the canny ones try and put in some neutral posts as well, to try and look more 'genuine'.)

I have a horse that had laminitis 2 years ago due to toxins in his bloodstream after having strangles. I've struggled to put weight on him for the last 18 months but found the best feed for him in the end was Fast Fibre, Alfa A Oil and Spillers Horse and Pony cubes. I changed his feeding regime umpteen times before finding something that worked. They're all individual and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another. Each time I changed his feed, I consulted an equine nutritionalist first to make sure that what I was feeding was a safe feed for him. If you'd like to know which feeds I used, PM me. I've used nearly every one!
