Hank, one of my catahoulas, is having his leg amputated today. He injured it somehow causing nerve damage. It has failed to heal and he has begun chewing on the leg so the vet says it must come off. His pre-surgery blood word was good except the BUN and ALT showed no results on the read out. The vet thinks this may be because the leg is "dying" and causing toxins in his blood stream. Poor Hank is very much a country dog and is not happy having to stay at the hospital with so much commotion and strange dogs about. Not to mention he had to wear an e-collar to keep him from chewing on his foot.

He'll be fine, my dog has his amputated in january and
has never looked back. I picked him up from the vets
after the op and he jumped in the car! He was pretty
sore that night but was fine after that.
There's no stopping him now, this pic was taken a couple
of weeks later.

Thank you for your kind words. Hank's surgery went well but when they began the operation they found a very large tumor behind the scapula which was causing the lameness. They have sent it off for a biopsy but I'm worried that it may be malignant. He lost a lot of blood and the vet tech said they almost lost him during surgery. I found a huge cushy dog bed on sale at WalMart so he is now recovering in the laundry room.
To add to this, when I got home Friday, my other Catahoula, Katie, age 15 1/2, had collapsed. Rushed her to the vet who treated her for congestive heart failure. But she is not improving so I have made an appointment for her tomorrow to be PTS. I will miss her terribly but I know it is the right thing for her. It is not right for a dog who could leap on the back of a truck, chase rabbits, and accompany me for miles while I rode to be kept alive when she can only walk with great effort and assistance.
