Righto .. Del, the thoroughbred I ride for the lady who owns the yard Ted is kept at, has been a right numpty recently. With the snow and ice he hadn't been ridden for a while and when his owner rode him, he threw her off on the road because he didnt want to go past something and came cantering home. Luckily his owner was fine, just fustrated that she couldnt get him past and she put it down to it being his first time out in a while and he was alone, so she went out with the horse next door but he was still a prat. We then thought that maybe he just needs to be ridden more so I offered to ride him again. In the school he's as good as gold, coming on really nicely with his jumping (5yr old ex racer and hasnt jumped very much but jumping nearly 3ft single jumps now) After being in the school the first day I rode him I took him out on the roads for a walk. We were getting on really well until we came across a field with some incrediably (sp?) scary small brown goats in it. He walked past slowly and I kept my leg on on and spoke to him nicely and we kept going. This was until a car appeared and Del thought "Yeah right! I'm going home!" and span round to go off home, every time I turned him back he carried on going till he was facing home again and nothing I did could stop him. He then started walking right in the bushes along the side of the road and everytime I turned him out to the road he went further into the bushes, if I turned him towards the bushes he just reared. After about 10 mins of this I gave up and go off and led him past and let the now 3 cars pass, luckily the person in the first car knew Del and was very patient. Once they went past I somehow managed to get back on from the ground (im not very agile!) and we walked a bit further down the road and then headed for home. I decided to take him back past the goats away from home so he learnt that he couldnt make me get off when he didnt want to do something. He got halfway past and then did his trick of spinning, going into the bush, rearing. He staretd annoying me so I gave him a big boot, which resulted in a vertical rear and then leap whislt still in the bush. He managed to pull the stirrup off the saddle so I had to get off and search for that. Once it was back on I got on and got angry and made him go past the goats. Dont know how, I think he just realised I was really peed off and decided to do as he was told. Eventually we went home.
I rode him again yesterday and again he was doing good in the school and I decided to go out again. He started playing up before we'd even left the yard, rearing, spinning and being stupid and we somehow ended up back in the school. He started doing what he did with the bushes along the fence of the school and I couldnt stop him. When we got away from the fence I got angry and smacked him a few times behind my leg and made hi trot to the gate trying to keep him going, he stopped did a vertical rear and twisted, I somehow stayed on for that but then he kinda jumped and I fell forwards and he reared up, smacking me in the face and knocking me off balance and so when he twisted again I went out the side door. I got back on and really booted him so we trotted all the way out onto the road. He was an angel from then on until we met a horsebox and he very nearly walked backwards into it, did his bush, rear, spinning thing and I ended up in tears, fustrated because I didnt know how to sort him out. Luckily some friendly girls and their horse came past and offered to lead us past the box. So we followed and he was fine and when we left the horses he was happy to be going home.

Ahh that was a mission! So if anyone has any kind of advice of how we can sort Del out and stop his stupid behaviour on the road, I'd be very grateful. The owner supposedly had the person who re-schooled him and sorted him out before out today to ride him, but I dont know if it happened because we had a lot of rain. Again ... cookies for getting this far

Just a thought, can someone follow you with a lunging whip (not to hit him with I might add) but to crack when he least expects it and see if he will shoot forward away from the nasty person on the ground?
Well done for persevering

Thats a good idea

just that there's hardly ever anyone around :/ I could ask Ted's owner to do it though. Thanks for help

Blimey T, first of all - well done for trying!!

Secondly, the generic : get the owner to check his back/ saddle/ teeth etc.

Sounds as if he's just being nappy if its on that same strip of road away from home. With Darce it took quite a lot of perserverance (Sp?!?) but due to his behaviour I, personally wouldn't attempt to ride him down there

Due to the nature of him rearing and pratting around with cars and other vehicles around, and with it being on a road its not worth the danger, sorry

If you can get it sorted without him rearing etc then I literally would spend a good 20 minutes just going backwards and forwards past home, he'll soon get the idea
smile.gif
He's got to have a few more brain cells than Darcy anyway!!

FB : He does it when something scares him and he just decides he really doesnt want to go past, doesnt matter where it is :/ Although going out of the yard it was just him being stupid. Thanks for your opinion anyway

Lets just see what happens ..

How's his flatwork i.e leg-yielding etc?? If he is honestly frightened of something it might help to get him to bend away from it, so that he can't see. Maybe anyway!

Good luck

Aha ermm flat work is okay, he does leg yeild but he's not very supple so needs a lot more work on that. This horse is for sale and I really want him! Despite him insisting on dragging me through hedges lol ..

Haha

surprisingly his stupidness isn't a reason for me not to buy him lol .. its purely money! I could afford him, but then I wouldnt be able to have a car, without a car I wouldnt be able to get to him when I'm home.. is sooo annoying!!

whenever a horse isnt willing to go forwards i do reverse phycology and make him go back untill he cant possibly go backwards anymore then he will want to go forwards, it works a treat for me, espec when horses dont want to go up lorry ramps. so if he starts it before he leaves the yard try it then instead of on the road and see what happens!!

I certainly wouldn't consider taking him out on his own again until his behaviour has been sorted out.

It sounds as though he is either genuinely scared or nappy.

Is there somewhere that has a safe, off-road ride you could box up to with a companion. (In my experience, worrying about the traffic certainly does not help the rider's confidence!)

In the meantime you will need to be very firm and consistent when riding him in the school in that you should insist on an immediate response to your aids so that this becomes his default setting.

I had something similar with my wuss of a horse. Used the reverse technique to get him past scary objects like a log on the ground even. Also hacked out with others as much as possible ensuring he was lead horse once his confidence improved.

He was always good with traffic and had 'self preservation' at heart so felt as long as I could stay with him I'd be ok. No fun messing about on the road though. Good luck, oh and I was told not to look at the scary object and sing, presumably to make me relax.

Take care.

PS I could get past so much more easily if I was in a good brisk trot before he spotted the scary object.

Thanks for all the advice, the person who re-schooled him did ride him yesterday the way I had been taking him and said he was as good as gold! But she said there were hardly any cars, no lorries and no small scary goats lol .. so I think he is genuinely scared, but I will definatly try the reverse phycology

I have a horse that goes through nappy phases. He doesn;t rear, he just runs backwards regardless of what's behind him. We've ended up down ditches, backing into cars, hedges etc etc. He will also spin and run for home.
I find smacking doesn;t work as he hots up and threatens to rear or runs faster!!!
The ONLY thing that works besides getting off and leading is to turn him round and round in small circles, I mean really pulling his head round and booting him on. After a few times, release all your aids as soon as you are facing the direction you want to go in and relax, gently asking him to go forward. If he carries on being a prat, repeat the process, as many times as you have to. Eventually my horse gets sick of being whizzed round and he gives in and walks forward. Then I tend to trot him on past whatever has upset him and give a big pat afterwards.
Maybe that's something else you could try?
