i have just started helping a friend out with her VERY naught pony, he is fine in trot except very reluctant to go forward into an outline but when you ask for canter he just starts rodeo bucking! little thing nearly had me off today!! even when you get the canter going as soon as you push him on he puts in a huge buck!

has had the phsyo, saddle checked etc and he is perfect on the lunge. i am sure it is habbit now as his owner is quite nervous and he has got away with it for too long. i am determined to help her sort this problem

any tips/advice?

thankss

How old is he & has he had much training. The description you are giving isn't necessarily a naughty pony, it sounds like a pony that is very unbalanced & whos groundwork is not established. You need to do loads of work involving transitions. By doing this & also loads of leg yielding you will increase the pony's ability to balance himself & move more correctly. The leg yielding will teach him eventually to bring his hocks underneath him & support himself better. This with loads of transitions will help him move smoothly into the next pace rather than lurching or throwing himself into it. He will also go forward easier & go forward into his bridle.

This will take some time but it will be worth it in the end. There is no quick fix, quick fixes rarely work for long anyway.

Good Luck
