when my boy canters out on a hack, if you give him his head at all he SHOOTS off, and he is quite strong to pull up even though I ride him in a pelham and teeth/back all ok etc. Any advice?
A martingale a diff nose band maybe and a good seat contact - stick your bum in the saddle and shoulders back and a leg contact (I don't mean kick I mean so he knows that your there) If your giving him his head and taking a forward set he is bound to want go ! However if he is really wild then circles maybe ?? tho not easily done on a track I know.
I had a share horse similar to this, he had no mouth, his owner had had him in a 3-ring gag for most of his life!
He was fine on his out but was very excitable when hacking in company. The more you tried to pull him up the faster he would get & he would fight you, i found a Market Harborough very useful, he was then pulling against himself & not me
