Alisha is lovely to jump on the left rein, very controlled and keeps a nice rhythm. However, she is a completely different horse on the right rein, she charges at the jump and then throws her head quite violently on landing - she doesn't do this at shows though

Was jumping her on a circle tonight - on the left rein she kept a lovely rhythm between the fences, but the right rein was a nightmare! What can I do to help with this problem?
I have jumped her in draw reins a couple of times and she keeps her rhythm nicely, has anyone or does anyone used a market harborough for jumping?

this is going to sound very strange, but please would you check that her vision in her right eye is okay?
my best ever mare started doing this when being loose schooled, jumping very differently on one rein compared to the other, and it turned out that she had a cataract and had gone almost blind in one eye... the inside one on the rein she was having difficulties with.
i know it's a chance in a million, but it's worth having a look and doing the startle test somewhere safe, just to be sure.
otherwise, it's just lots of schooling over poles on the ground and then increasing the heights once she's going nicely on the right rein, i reckon.

Ok thanks, i will do, it's odd that she doesn't do it when she's out competing though... do you reckon it could be connected to the problems i have with her not accepting the left rein and wanting to hang on my right rein the whole time?

yes, that's much much more likely, obviously! tons of flatwork is the key. have you had her teeth done by someone good, that can make a huge difference.
if you're right handed, be aware that your right hand, being your dominant one, will be stronger and more fixed than your left. just keep giving it away and not letting her lean, get her into the left hand until you have an equal contact. best of luck!

Thanks for all your help, I am really trying hard with her. She is a lovely horse, but not always the easiest lol! yes i am right handed and I do have a really bad habit of holding it!! Thanks again for all your help, will let you know how we get on

just be aware of your right hand in midair, if you get a bit tense it might pull (subconscious "i'll save us" kind of thing!) and that might explain what she does on landing. at competitions you might ride very differently, concentrating on the course etc.
the last thing i'd do is put a gadget on for jumping, tbh.
best of luck!
