have came up to the yard today to hear theyve had to bring my 2 horses in as my gelding was mounting my mare, gelding is 5, was late cut and has covered. but theyve been out together for a while with no problems.

yo said theyll need to be seperated which i know is right but the thought of seperating them fills me with dread! they are quite attached to each other and i can see one of them jumping out to get the other! ive got 2 acres at home and tempted just to bring my mare home, at least then i know theyr not going to hear each other shouting. i dont really ride her so it doesnt matter where she is.

can anyone give me advice as im blooming stressed out!!!!!

Can't you run a strip of electric across your field so they can see each other and touch but not get, erm, fruity? At least until you've worked out who is the instigator.

Your mare is probably at the high point of her season and encouraging him, surely whether you seperate them or not is up to you. Many geldings behave like this when mares are bothering them to 'get on with it' rather it being the gelding that is at fault. He may try to cover her but they will both soon realise that he can't do the deed and lose interest. If it hasn't been a problem before then I don't really see why it should be now, she is unlikely to injure him because she will be receptive and he is unlikely to even try when she isnt. We had one mare who had been used as a brood mare previous to us getting her, she was covered by all our geldings at some point because she just wouldn't leave them alone until they tried for her. She soon got fed up when she realised they weren't 'real' men!:)

they are not put in the same field everyday if thatmakes sense i was going to seperate them when they went onto the summer grazing as theyd only be next door to each otherbut that doesnt look like happening anytime soon!!!

apparantly she was encouraging him then kicking lumps out of him but she still let him on and they had a 'go'!

my mare and gelding where doing the same thing earlier, dirty buggers! theres nothing much I can do as they are the only 2 horses on the yard, I don't want them seperated as one wont be able to get into the shelter then, so just hoping that as soon as she comes out of season they will stop it!

I agree that its your choice about whether they are seperated! its not like its someone elses horse that is getting mounted, so what right do they have to tell you what to do!

I'd be worried about your mare being on her own if you took her home! the poor lady, shes only doing what comes naturally!

the yo thought they would she was booting out at him and apparantly there was another gelding at the fence and mine was going for that!!!! yo was wondering if hed been cut right thats the last thing i need lol

Ok, I'm going to ask a dumb question... do horses only have sex to get pregnant or do they do it for fun too?? My mare is always egging the boys on then kicking them when they come near!
I think surely soon your mare will realise your boy is not up to the job and tire of him... seems a shame to split them up just because of one incident..

they were going to get aplit up anyway just the fields are not set up the way they were going to be yet and worried they jump out if they can hear each other
...i think they do it for fun lol

my friend's mare was mounted by friend's gelding when they first got mare. She went into season and he mounted, fell off, remounted etc. But hasn't since that first day. He is very dominant in the herd and quite a pain at times with the other horses. I would see if it happens again (next season) then reconsider options. is this the first time she's been heavily in season with him?

For fun, mine really liked a mare 4 hh smaller than him and often jumped the fence to get to her. She'd carry on gazing! :)

i think it is the first one yes. theyr a pair of horrors theyr in the stables now and still whinnying and batting their eyelashes at each other!
