Taz was sedated yesterday morning so that he could get his leg scanned. He then had to have fluid drained out of it and kept in for the day.

As he was coming round from the initial sedation I asked the vet if it was ok to give him some sedalin to keep him calm for the day. He said yes that it would be fine.

However, today he still seems to be partially sedated. He just does not seem his usual self at all and I'm really worried about him. Is it usual for the sedation to last so long?

He did get his annual vaccination yesterday too so could it have something to do with that as he is very sore in his neck today where the vacc was injected?

He just seems to have lost his usual energy as I stood in the field with him for a while and he seemed a bit dreamy. He kept pawing the ground as well. So haven't a scooby. Please help!!

no idea sorry but if you're really worried id call your vet and have a chat

It can take days for sedatives / partial anasthetics to wear off. But if you give your vet a call they should be able to re-assure you.

We've all been there staring at them and worrying!

it is quite common for the horse to remain "sleepy" or "not quite right" the day after sedation. i would just watch him for the day and see how it goes. his body has had quite a lot to deal with in one day. put yourself in his shoes.... give him lots of tlc... and im sure he will right as rain in no time. best of luck x

Notice you are in scotland?May I ask what vetss you used?We are in Aberdeen.
Horse at our yard became lathargic, dopey sort of looked too much effort to pick up feet. After many blood tests and examinations turns out they think it was reaction to jag and horse had deep abcess in neck.Apparently after discussing among other vets its happened to a few horses with this particular brand or batch of jags .Not saying that is what your horse has got but def worth considering.

It varies on the individual horse but with some it can take some time for the sedation to completely ware off - especially if they gave him a large dose.

Pawing the ground will be the sore neck due to the jab, my horse does this and has to be fed at head height for a couple of days after.

I would give him 24 hours or so and see how he is - or if this is really unusual for him after sedation/jab call the vet.
