Need suggestions: traveling with a large dog

Hello! We are moving from Hamburg Germany to Crewe in the coming weeks. We have a Great Dane who we brought with us from California to Hamburg, but are finding it strangely expensive (twice or more than the cost of what it was to move my horse?!) and difficult to get her from Hamburg to the UK. Does anyone have experience with this basic trip? Thanks!
 
Hiya, sadly we aren't legally allowed to drive in Germany currently. My Us license while valid is no longer accepted in Germany. We have simply been using public transit. She has her passport etc. I am completely flabbergasted at how much more difficult it seems to be moving for a two hour flight compared to our previous move from California.
 
Some animal courier companies have monopolies on certain airports, so they ccan charge what they like sadly.

You could maybe try asking amongst dog showing or breeding circles about the best routes or couriers for exporting?

Oh dear 😏 given the crazy blockages we've encountered that sounds about right. That's a lovely idea, I'll try to google a bit to find some clubs!
 
We exported a working sheepdog from Scotland to Germany and the buyer spoke to working and show folk to see if anyone had space for him when they were travelling. I don't know the total cost to her for doing it this way, but as you are splitting the cost with others it should be a cheaper option.
 
We moved our two dogs from Europe to UK with a ride from 'blablacar', you pay the cost of petrol and you and your dog get driven to your destination. I don't know if Germany is included in this website but I'm sure they have a similar site if not. For us a 24 hour journey with 2 dogs and long suffering husband cost about 400 euro including ferry. I found this website really helpful too http://www.seat61.com/dogs-by-train.htm Believe me, getting INTO the UK from Europe is even harder than getting out! Good luck with the journey :)
