So, I'm on the lookout for a 2nd dog, ideally of whippety stature, a bitch and anything upto the age of 2 considered. Rescue or pup from a home/breeder. Pure pups are expensive, so although not ruled out, money doesn't grow on trees so I've diverted my attention to rescues... not to mention there are so many out there that need homes.
Along the lines of 'it'll happen when it's right'.... I looked and applied for a little whippety bitch... got a reply back saying she's already been re-homed, but we have ''C''. So I asked about ''C''....
Then the phone goes, and it's the rescue home. A good half hour on the phone later, I know all about ''C'' and her background, and know all about the rescue home (they're horsey too, so conversation was free flowing!) So far, we all meet the perfect match, and I like the sound of them as a whole, and she was getting excited listening to my background, and how I look after dogs (and horses!).

What I didn't tell them though, was about my leg operation due in a few weeks time. This will mean two things... firstly, non weight bearing means I won't be able to do the dog walking, but secondly, I'll be at home, on the sofa recovering with a dog or two. (got a spaniel already). Now, in jumps the OH, who approves of getting a second dog, but doesn't approve of the timing. Hes got a bit cross, claiming he's not walking a new dog. (He's not the greatest at walking the spaniel, it is ''his'' dog, but leaves it to me and our teenage children to walk most of the time).
Then he says we ''might'' have his parents' spaniel while they move house - it could be a few days, weeks or even months. I can accomodate 3, done that before, but is it fair on a newbee? It might not happen at all!!
I feel it's right, but must think of ''C''... She's not a rescue per say, just her previous owners haven't been able to keep her, so passed around twice already.

Voices of reasons please...

How long before you have to give the rescue a definite answer? And would the teenage children be able to walk C as well as the spaniel?

the voice of reason says dont take on another dog while you are unable to walk.. BUT, if said dog is quiet and amenable and sounds like it would get on with existing dog it may be worth trying and you could do training from your sofa things like retrieving , sit, wait, down, roll over, that sort of thing but you need to bear in mind that dog has already had some disruption in its life so you need to be pretty sure that you will be successful.....how long will you be out of action and can the rescue hold on to the dog if they feel you are the right home for it. i have tried to be objective but if i was in your shoes and the dog sounded right for me i would probably go for it, even if its not the sensible thing to do. good luck

C is a Whippet X. The children walk the spaniel with no issues.
I'd like to give a definite answer as soon as. I hate keeping people waiting, but haven't discussed timings. I'm going to forward on a note from my vets, saving a home check this week.

I wouldn't waste the rescues time when if you are about to have an operation it is a terribel time to get a new dog.
Wait until after the operation, what if new dog has crap house training? Or is a terror for chewing? or really active or howls a lot etc?
Wait until you are recovered and can integrate a new dog properly.

Sorry I wouldn't go for it then - I know it is very easy to generalise but my whippet x is a maniac (not sure what she is crossed with!) and not the sort to settle in nicely while you recuperate. I fear you would just be setting up a situation where you might struggle, better to wait until you are fully fit and can cope with whatever your new rescue throws at you :)

I would get her, but I am an instant gratification person! You would have to get your OH on board though, or could the rescue keep her longer for you?
