Apologies if this has been discussed before

I have a 6 year old GSD who needs to put some weight on.
The OH is currently 'between jobs' and so Nico's exercise has increased somewhat, consequently he has lost weight when he really didn't need to. Additionally, we now have a 14 week old Lakeland Terrier who adores him and insists on endless playing.
He is fed twice a day (Arden Grange with tuna added every other day) but he doesn't particularly enjoy his food so simply increasing his rations is not the answer.
I have suggested to hubby that he feed him three times a day in slightly smaller portions to try and increase his intake but what I really need are suggestions of 'high calorie' foods.
Any ideas?

Tripe is fab for weight gain or adding veg oil to food and 3 smaller meals a day is good for a poor eater as feeding larger meals sees them all to often leaving it, smaller meals kind of misleads them but it can often work.
Is raw feeding a possibility?, normally I would say self regulators are generally of an ideal weight but if you are worried then try a few things, if he continues to lose maybe a vet check to rule of fat absorption problems, esp being a shep.

Tripe, adding more oily fish/salmon oil/eggs to food.
Switch the AG to the salmon variety.
I don't mind them a bit ribby but tripe is a great conditioner, Prize Choice do frozen blocks in major pet stores if you don't have the stomach for raw green stuff :p

Harley's always been a skinny widget!

Tried Burns/Arden Grange with added cans of fish for lunch.

But 2 months ago I put him onto Fish4dogs and everyone has noticed the difference. His middle has just filled out. Not even feeding as many lunches.

Highly recommend you try it.

Tripe is a good idea. Forgot about that.
I've toyed with the idea of raw for as long as I can remember but never quite summoned up the courage to try it.
I'm quite confident the weight loss is simply due to the increase in work but I agree that being a GSD I need to keep an eye on it. We had one a few years ago who always struggled to maintain his weight but that was definately due to an underlying medical condition.

I'm a total convert to raw, GSDs seem to do really well on it, just wish it suited both dogs, constantly getting comments about the pup's coat and teeth and general condition...but still getting asked if he is crossed with something :p
Prize Choice is a good place to start as the packets are easily stored so you can have one raw day a week to start off with etc.

He has always looked good on AG before but will give the tripe a go and if that doesnt work will have a look at the raw diet

We used to feed tripe raw to our GSDs when I was a child. It was green and smelled vile! I guess it hasn't changed at all? (she said hopefully!) :)

It's not too bad. My mother used to cut her own (pukes).
My friends feed it, minced with chicken carcasses, then put through the mincer again a third time with fish.
They gave me some and I had it in a catering container, in a cool box, in the shed to defrost, and could smell it the minute I opened the front door :o
Amazing food though.

StevieG...feed the tripe raw...go on go on go on....if anything else, you'll never be able to use the microwave again if you cook it :p

Oh yes, FGS remember to tear a hole in the Prize Choice packet before you put it in the microwave to defrost, when the pressure gets too much and it explodes the microwave will never be the same again. :o

It is GROSS but they love it, and you can hide all sorts of good for them stuff in it (Dex wont eat his offal raw unless it is mixed in with tripe)!!

Well I have been to PAH today and bought a couple of packs of tripe so we are going to give it a try tomorrow. Fingers crossed it works!

Sorry totally off topic but seeing the posts about tripe brought back some bad memories.
My mum used to cook it for my dad, he loves it, but she also used to feed it to me as a kid and tell me it was chicken in white sauce :( Yet she wouldn't blooming eat it herself :o

When I was a child my gran used to eat it raw with vinegar!!!!!!!
