Hi
How does everyone apply their neem oil and how often? I have read that you can dilute it and spray but it is oil so does it rise it the top? Or do you sponge on?
Tia

I use an old hoof oil brush for mine - gets to the roots of his mane and tail. My itcher is in a paddock with nothing to rub on except the ground, and I just apply it whenever he is fetched in (tied up outside his box with a haynet, if he was indoors he would rub) and I see him trying to rub, which is most days. I even found a patch on top of his quarters he had rubbed on the ground through a fly rug :(

Oh it's not just mine then.i have just lunged him, the washed him with aloe Vera shampoo, rinsed/scraped off, clean rug, put neem in his mane and tail with a sponge then sponged the rest of it that was left on the sponge on his coat. It used a lot. Am also feeding micronised indeed, turmeric and brewers yeast, but live near loads of water. Thanks for replying!

There have been some good results feeding turmeric - if you are on Facebook, there is a group headed by an Australian vet, Turmeric Users Group. Mine is on it and it hasn't stopped his itching although I think it isn't quite so bad (his is grass related) but his coat is gleaming and you can see he is very dark bay now rather than it just looking almost black.

Takes have been on there for a while now, will have to see, mine could be grass related, whatever he can't stay in, he hates it unless it's winter!

I mix my Neem oil up with some Pig Oil, and wack that on with an old wallpaper brush for large areas - mine has it on his mane & tail and down the back of his legs. You can use a sponge for smaller areas.

I also put Neem oil in a flyspray which I make myself. There are home made fly spray recipes on here, and I use a combination of all the suggested ingredients!!! Seems to work, so far, as well as the cost-a-fortune P!sswaters you buy in tack shops!

We use a pressurised sprayer, the type you pump up with the handle, you can mix neem with water but need to use some detergent as an emulsifier, I use a teaspoon of Fairy. Should only normally need 5% neem, double it if bad flies, mix with 2 teaspoons each of citronella and cedar oil, top up to 3 litres with water. Keep in warm place otherwise neem will solidify and block up sprayer jet. Got this from the late, great, Dave from Neemgenie.

I made some the other day, neem oil, Avon SSS, tsp fairy, cattle insect repellent citronella, cold tea and cider vinegar, still didn't work!

Normally I just put neat between back legs and along the top of the mane and tail if needed, sometimes a dab around the face. Works for the black fly and midges. But the cleggs have bee awful round us recently so I made some up with 5-10% neem, a glug of detergent, 1/4 bottle vinegar and the rest hot water in a 500ml bottle which I sponge over the lower areas and legs and then pour over the neck and back and sponge in - this is enough for 2 fell ponies. Works immediately, cleggs vanish in seconds and although you get the odd brave soul returning they don't seem to bite as much, just the areas I have missed! Once the liquid evaporates you can see a film of oil everywhere, works really well for me :-) I do make it fresh each day though, works best when still warm.
