Took out Mr Jock in the pouring rain today It was a great opportunity for him to hear loud drains, loud rain and water running on the road as he's not used to hacking alone In a village. plus I don't wait for the sunshine to ride.

A bunch of 'blokes doing some work on a drive way. they all looked at me like I was an idiot and one muttered along the lines of 'shouldn't be riding that horse in the rain'!!!! I was Livid but I don't like to make us 'horse women' look too mental like our apparent stereotype so I just said hello and glared.

Here's some pictures of the poor wet beast :) Heavy fans will like (I hope!)

With my Husband

It's not even worth getting worked up enough to write a thread about imo, no point being livid at clueless idiots when you know and we know that it's not neglectful to ride in the rain.

Handsome boy!
But seriously? Lol I don't ride in the rain as I'm fairweather! Well, am spoilt now I've moved to a yard with an indoor so I can ride whenever I like :p But hacking wise I'll ride in the rain if I'm caught in it but otherwise I don't bother!

Riding in heavy rain can mean poor visibility - you and your horse are less likely to see / hear traffic coming, and drivers may find it harder to see you. Maybe the bloke who commented was thinking more along safety lines than animal cruelty. Plus, considering the poor sods had to be out working in the pouring rain they probably found it a bit odd that someone would choose to be out in it when they didn't have to. Us horsey folk may think it's perfectly normal to get soaked to the skin out riding but I have plenty of non-horsey friends who are likely to think that anyone who willingly goes out in the rain is a bit weird! I think you are over-reacting somewhat, you have no idea what they were really thinking... and even if they did think you were an idiot - WHY CARE?

Get him talking to Hovis on here. im sure they would both report their mothers for cruelty riding in rainlol. Gawd did you not know horses dissolve in rain dur. But hey what a lovely gorgeous boy :)

livid, really?
i dont think i'd give what non horsey people think of the weather i ride in two hoots. just smile sweetly. you're never going to see them again, what does it matter what they think?

Plus to be honest, there are safety considerations to riding on the road in heavy rain, less driver visibility, shorter breaking distances, less hearing for you..as the poster above me remarked, could they possibly be meaning that not that you were being cruel?

He's a lovely horse, OP.

Good for you for not putting off exercising because of the rain. Considering it rains on approximately 1 in 3 days, it's pretty difficult to avoid rain if you ride a lot.

I once had a lady tell me I was cruel for walking my dog in the rain. It was a warm summers day and the dog was a collie X lab !

Nowt so queer as folk.

I don't get this you jump on me for overreacting just because my chosen word was 'livid' I don't think I'm the one over reacting on that one...

I was annoyed just like I'd be annoyed at anyone judging the way I care for my animals. The road in question is in fact a lane way out in the sticks on exmoor we have about 4 cars a day the village has no shops and only 5 houses. We have hi viz and visibility was fine I'd never put us at risk.

I don't see why my little light hearted post is jumped on as if I said I got off.My horse and shoved my whip up his backside because I thought he might have been a bit mean... jeeez! Lighten up.

My horse would agree with those guys. She definitely thinks it's horse abuse to be ridden or turned out in the rain. If she had opposable thumbs, she would be dialing the RSPCA.

Rain won't hurt him and just ignore the builders comments. Hope you don't leave that chunky nylon headcollar on in the field though, that caught up won't break before his neck does.

I would never choose to ride in rain, but often get caught in it once out.

I think it wise to get them used to it though. When we first got the daughters pony we were caught out, pony was 3 years had been bomb prof until then, but the sounds of the heavy rain, cars spraying her, water rushing down gutters etc had her seeing monsters at every step, we had a very scary 10 mins getting back to the yard. Now she is as bomb proof as you can get a pony even loves walking and splashing in the water running down the edges of the road.

Maybe its because the thread title isnt substantiated by the post? Do you write for the Daily Mail at all? :p

Maybe they thought you shouldnt be out because you may catch cold?

Lovely horse :)

Well if they are builders on a tea break then you'll be seeing them a lot ;) because we all know a builders working day is 5 hours tea/coffee/loo breaks and 1 hour work ;)

You haven't met my builders then! They are currently working on my kitchen extension (knock down and rebuild). They turn up at 8.25am 6 days a week, don't stop for lunch, are hesitant to accept a cup of tea unless I actually go out with the steaming cups ( I give them biscuits too) and I don't know what they do about the loo because they don't have one and haven't asked to use mine. They usually finish about 2.30pm or 3 but only because they have completed the days tasks. I get a daily report of what they have done, a plan for the next days work, all tradesmen are introduced to me so that I know who is who and what they are doing and they sweep the site to within an inch of its life every day before they leave. Its tidier than before they arrived now! We've had some horrible weather lately but they plough on regardless. I've got other work to do on the house next year when I've saved up and you can bet I won't be employing anyone else to do it. They are total stars and I can see why they only work by personal recommendation.

What a thread!

Comments about Hi-Viz and headcollars....I'm sure the OP has a brain in there somewhere without the PC brigade jumping on board to give their 'sagely comments...'...

God help us....

Ahh daily mail wouldn't even read that rag! :D

No no that photo was taken just as he was turned out I don't know why I didn't take it off before I took the photo as I then took the photo with my husband before letting him escape my awful camera work. Head collars off in field and stable.

I perhaps don't or I would have thought twice before typing my tea break thoughts for the horsey world to see! Ahh well live and learn ;)
