My fields surround 2 and a bit sides of a new house - yesterday the 'lady of the house' demanded access to cut the hedge (MY HEDGE!) so that they could enjoy the super views we have over the North Downs. OK, being reasonable I said that I would move my horses and take down four fence posts to allow tractor access to get a flail in there. Well I did all this, stood 5 horses in all day as I knew they would go loopy. Well, nothing happened, tried phoning and got the 'housekeeper' who claimed that "Madam is out"//..... Flaming furious, I'll not bother to be a friendly neighbour again. All it would take is one phone call to say 'sorry' , we haven't had time to do it etc etc ......
What has happended to the countryside? I was perfectly happy to make an effort even though there was no formal agreement to allow access or to cut hedges. Manners maketh the man............ or woman!

Can 'the lady' not cut the hedge from her own side??

Tell her to get the shears out herself or bugger off.

Let her cut the hedge and then put your store of big bales infront of it!

Oh yes, lovely touch! Even better YOU cut the hedge so it looks like your being neighbourly and THEN stack all your big bales there

Our neighbours used to cut our hedge to enjoy the view across our fields, we never said anything - we wanted to stay on friendly terms, then they objected to our planning permission for our sand school, saying it would 'breach their human rights'!! to look at the sand school from their upstairs window.
We were granted the pp with a note from the pp department saying that no one is entitled to a view across anyone's land! we now do not allow them to cut the hedge - idiots!

People are horrible sometimes!!

I think you'll find you miss understood M'lady.

I think you'll find she was demanding that YOU cut YOUR hedge so that SHE can enjoy the views over YOUR land.

Either that or she was asking you to relocate your dung heap to the land adjacent (and upwind) of her mansion.

I used to livery on a farm surrounded by houses - a fact made worse by the land they stood on being lost by Compulsory Purchase years before. Several of these houses were occupied by "Neighbours from Hell" who having chosen to live in a rural area took to objecting to just about everything that takes place in it.

One fine summer's day the girls set up a jumping course a little near these neighbours so they complained about the dust - some of the girls stopped but later in the day different liveries turned up and rode the course again - pandemonium !

Finally, the owner of the farm - a very pleasant man but one of few words came out to see the fuss and only heard a torrent of profanities from a WOMAN!

Madam, he said, have you ever wondered why your garden is bigger than all the other houses ? It's big enough to get another house on it but no one was allowed to build there because it's a PLAGUE PIT!!! We used to have dairy cows here years ago but they caught ANTHRAX and that's where they're all buried.

I would be very wary of allowing someone like that access onto your land to cut your side of the hedge. They could claim it created a precedent for all sorts of things. Just a thought.

It happens in cities too. I have a tenanted flat and new tenants have just moved in. The flat is right in the city centre, next to quite a busy road. Already, they are moaning about road noise, people shouting in the street, when will the scaffolding on the building next door be taken down and when will the roadworks in the city centre finish, because it looks a mess? Maybe they should be the ones living in the countryside.

DONT LET ANY ONE EVER CUT YOUR HEDGE !!!

I was being a good neighbour and the house at the bottom of my garden asked if they could cut my hedge - on their side. Yes i said of course.

What i did not know was they were 8ft lower than me and cut the hedge so it was 6ft from their side. All i had left was a few tiny twigs and a fantastic view of their washing, compost heap and garage. I could not do a thing because I had stupidly said yes.
