My neighbours lab is driving me mad :o
They live two doors up but their garden sweeps around the back of the house between us and ends on the back of my garden (Like a big L shape). Their pooch has taken to standing at the fence between their garden and ours and growling and barking her head off.

I expected her to be unsettled at first as I am a smoker so will be out in the garden in the middle of the night... but we have lived here for nearly 3 months now and she is getting worse. The Lab is lurching at the fence if B is in the garden, teeth bared the lot! And she stands and growls - teeth bared - if its just me or OH.

B is a stupid little creature and will try to climb the fence / squeeze through any gaps to play with the lab:rolleyes: so if we hear her outside we stick B on the longline for some garden time. But even if B stays well away from the fence the growling and lunging will happen.

I have tried shouting the dogs name (I hear them screaming it often enough!) and telling her 'no', 'enough' and 'house' and then I get lunged at :o

I feel sorry for the family in the middle (they have a couple of young children) when this lab is shouting at me on a night, B will bark back on her braver days she usually just runs back into the house with her tail between her legs and hides :( The family in the middle are planning on getting a puppy early next year... so this situation could get so so much worse.

I know this is a bit of a ramble but I'm actually getting quite scared of this dog. If it broke through the (crap) fencing I think it would bite me and probably kill B. It is just getting a bit rubbish not wanting to use the lovely garden because of the lab (considering we moved here for the big garden:rolleyes:)

I have been trying to catch the owners of the dog to have a word with them but they never seem to be in, they seem to work shifts and must have someone who comes and puts the dog in the garden / back in the house.

I am going to demand that my landlord / the neighbour re inforce the fencing but in the meantime I dont know how to deal with the dog.

I have tried talking to her calmly and being nice and ignoring the growling (but staying well away), tried using my serious doggy voice and telling her to sod off and completely ignoring her.

Nothing has worked.

My neighbours staffies do this still after a year fortunatly the fece is safe. They now tend to get them in when we are outside but is really offputting when I am in the garden
Not muchg help though!

If they work shifts and you have the time, offer to feed or walk her?

She sees you as intruders, she barks and gets aggressive, you go away again, to her, job done.

Barriers can make dogs more aggressive/defensive. Mine are hellions behind a fence but fine once introduced.

No advice, but you have my sympathy, we've had some problems with a neighbour's dog recently too. It is really difficult, as people are so defensive of their dogs! I think you'd have an easier time complaining about their kids!

she may be like this from behind a fence, its HER garden and shes telling you that, but to meet her without the fence she probably is a complete doll.

it might be a good idea for you all to meet, possible best at her house first, so she can get used to you, maybe give her oodles of fuss/treats/love and if she is safe let her play with B. once she gets to know you she shouldnt want to go so ballistic at you.

Thanks everyone, I would love to walk her with B (aslong as the agression is just a fence related thing) I just NEVER see the owners... EVER. OH works strange shifts and my hours vary week to week so there would be no problems with me taking her out for a bit, she is a gorgeous dog but have never seen her out of the house / garden.
I spoke to the lady in the house between us and asked her to pass on my number if she sees the owners as she doesnt work so is in most of the time.

I'm tempted to stick a post it on their door! :o

It really scares the heeby jeebys out of me when I'm having a cig in the dark and I hear her growling at me from the bushes!

yeah put a note on/through their door. thats a good idea, you never know, they may struggle to find the time for walkies and you could help them out or something.

failing that, i suppose you could fearlessly approach the fence and see wether its all bark and no bite... i wouldnt though. hope things work out. x

Just a suggestion: get yourself something called the "Pet Corrector". This is a little red aerosol thingy which contains compressed air and makes a hissing noise.

What I would suggest you do is if neighbours dog comes barking near the fence, use it, and see if this helps.

Its a very useful little device; our neighbours dog is often aggressive towards ours as we walk past, and this aerosol just gives a little reminder that unwanted behaviour won't be tolerated!!

You can get them from most pet shops, or the vets can order one for you. Its a little red aerosol with "Pet Corrector" along the side in white. Cheap, cheerful, and they work by golly.

I was going to say use a water pistol but a Pet Corrector is probably better being less messy lol! Some friends of mine cured their neighbours dog of endless barking using a water pistol though so it does work.

I do agree that if you can go and meet the dog and maybe offer to walk it then relations could improve - with the neighbours as well as the dog :D Is it too early to put a note in a Christmas card?

We have a pet correcter somewhere actually! B was a complete nightmare when she was tiny and would bark at you if you ate anything infront of her, it helped with her for a while but then she started to fight it!

Im worried that it could upset the dog more, I will try to catch the owners first and if they are no use then I will give it a go.

I think we are going to end up moving AGAIN soon (not because of the dog!) but would still like however many months we are in this house to be enjoyable.

All labs are ruled by their stomachs..so give her titbits, she`ll soon see you in a different light. Tiny cubes of cheddar are excellent.

Shes overweight (90% of labs I see these days are fattys.... what's going on??) so I wont be giving her cheese, if the owners suggest I feed her then I will find a diet treat.

I don't think it's a good idea to start feeding someone else's dog

Whyever not ,if it cures the nuisance that she is to Op?? Overweight? Well one or two little cubes of cheese won`t make any difference whatsoever, this way there are no "neighbour debates" to get in to,and problem gets solved.Easy:D

In fairness to Puppy I kinda understand the point EK, my dog can't tolerate wheat and I discovered the builders were feeding him biscuits and sandwiches to 'make friends' - I was nice about it but understandably annoyed!!!!
