So lami pony has decided that under no terms is he going to be staying in his stable even if he is walking on three legs like he was the other day. Rearing at the stable door and trying to climb out meant we chucked him out to get on with it.

thankfully he was 100% sound by the end of the day but it has made me think when it comes round to my girls going out at night when summer gets called, they will be back in inthe day once it gets too hot, he will not want to do his 7 hours out........now we have two options try him in (which i think we will do) and see if he doesnt mind or if he tries to climb the door again chuck him out and it he get lami again at least he decided he wanted out.

since he really is lucky to be here with us and spent 9 months on box rest and has 15 degree rotations in both front tooties we are not going to do anything to make him unhappy.

he is in work, hacking and once his fittness and balance is back up schooling too.

he is unshod but has to have boots and pads on for turnout and riding of gets sore but he charges ahead as if he hasnt a care in the world.

diet is hifi molasses free, fast fibre and metformin (EMS) and soaked hay now spring is here..........

so the thing is what do you do with your lami's?

are the out at night? 24/7?

why o why did he have to start getting opinionated:cool::D:rolleyes:

Let him out at night with a muzzle on and see how he copes.

We need a lammie paddock!!

cant muzzle him as he will hurt himself trying to get it off!!! thats why i cant put fly masks/fringes on him.

once brothers knew one comes that will be anothe one in that paddock.......blinking norses!

My boy had a mild case of lami in October last year. He is out 24/7 as he is not a fan of stables (something I will be working on once one becomes free). We are lucky tho we have small paddocks which are great for lami prone types and he also has a muzzle if he needs it. He is ridden everyday now so hopefully with this combination he can stay out 24/7.

Although every horse is different so go carefully if your going to leave your horse out. Good luck :)

Just saw your post re the muzzle. Mine can only wear his if he is surrounded by electric fence to stop him getting his off. Can you not run some electric fencing round the inside of your paddock?

No, I once tried to leave a flu mask on him and when I went up later in the day he had one hoof caught on it and was standing on three legs, a few scraps to his face from his shoe so I dread to think what he would be like with a muzzle.

I will try with keeping him to his 7hours in the day but if he gets too stressy its not worth it. He had come I to summer with an attitude this year :D

Alfalfa can make some horses footy, not all, and there are plenty of laminitics who are fine on it, the amounts fed are probably negligable but if you are feeding fast fibre then you could probably try excluding it.

Mine lives out 24/7, I use electric fencing to create a small paddock or track and I have used a muzzle before on longer grazing, I did have to make the hole in the base larger though as she was getting too stressed and didn't seem able to manage to eat anything. Once the hole was made bigger she settled down to working to get her grass and I don't think was too stressed. I'm still not keen on muzzling though, but better than the alternative.

Would your YO not let you section an area off where he could stay with a companion, or turn out in a school with soaked hay?

He is in with my two good doer girls in a bare paddock, he won't eat the metformin without the hifi molasses free and fast fibre but its about a handfull so not much.

I'm on livery so I can't do a track.

Anything round his face apart from his bridle and head collar he tries to get off and will hurt himself.
It's just the worry he won't stay in at night this year as he can get pretty good at trying to climb over the stable door.

If he's on a bare paddock with others then I'd probably just leave him on that, stress is a laminitis trigger too, so probably not worth fighting with him on that score with keeping in /muzzling. Quality of life has to come into it too. I also feed alfalfa and have had no issues, if ain't broke and all that. ;)

My laminitic pony lives out 24/7 on very short grass but he isnt EMS just greedy the grass is so short it takes more effort to get it than he gets in calories anyway. Not sure I would leave an EMS pony to it to be honest but then I have never had one. I have just restricted this pony as he was a little too thin over winter for my liking so has been on proper grass for a week but I will say that a pony can eat 7kgs of grass or more depending on how greedy they are in a few hours. If they are restricted those 7 hours may well be far too long to keep him sound

Can you keep him on a bare patch of grass with soaked hay? And when I mean bare, I mean BARE, not just restricted? That way, he gets to be out and can see his friends but isn't really on grass.

My EMS pony is currently muzzled for 12 hours whilst out, then stabled with small holed net of hay the remainder. If you modify a muzzle so that he can get a tiny bit more (most people do this with the comfort/shires ones), then most ponies will start eating with it. Mine both go through phases of having theirs off two or three times during the day, but I'd rather that than leave them to it. Does anyone have different muzzles you can try him with, grazing in hand so he's supervised? EMS is so difficult. I can't feed alfalfa, but don't know if there's a connection between that and EMS - never researched it.

Sugars in grass are much lower overnight so I would turn him out at night and bring him in as early as convenient and see how he goes.

I have several laminitics, one with EMS, and I feel quality of life is important once they have stabilised. I have been known to increase the metformin when the sun has come out unexpectedly strongly after some rain and I can almost see the grass growing - how much do you currently give?

Mine is also much more able to tolerate sugar if he is in regular work - so I keep him as busy as I can to up his metabolism. If he is going to be hacked I will turn him out for an hour on nice grass sometimes, as I was told the exercise will use up the sugars in his blood stream and he does love going out in the big field. But when I turned him out one day and the teen didn't come to ride, I quickly lunged him instead - it's a tricky one!

I turn out other horses in the lami paddock during the day so it's always eaten down, but that's harder to do if you are at a yard.

He used to be on 15 twice a day he is now on 10 morning and night.....he has new. Stabilised for two years now and only been lame due to abscesses.

He is riding every/every other day, under rugged or not rugged to keep his body using his own sugars up he is kept lean.

Fransurry if you see my other post he will not even tolerate a fly mask on his face muzzle is out of the question.

To be honest we are at the point of if he doesn't want in then out it will have to be and we will hope for the best, I can't keep my mares in at night during the summer as one gets nose bleeds in the heat so has to be in.

I just wondered what others did.

Thank you
