Has anyone come across this please? Horse had op on hind leg, has nerve damage in foreleg due to being down during op. Any idea of prognosis/timescales for recovery? Thanks

Oh dear; I think I just found it and it wasn't a good outcome. Any more positive experiences from anyone? It seems the vets are still hoping it's temporary...

i had a horse i looked after at vet school who had radial nerve paralysis following an op. he had anti-inflammatories and massage and gradually improved over the following days. he was walking normally again in a week or so.

The suspected nerve damage Toy had from being on his back did not effect a positive prognosis as the vets were intending to treat the area with anti-inflammatories.
The reason it became a problem for us was that it prevented him from standing and each time he fell he landed on the site of the wound thus making it rupture.
I think we were just terribly unlucky.
I hope all goes well with your horse.

I hope your horse will be ok, but unfortunately many years ago i had a mare with a 5 week foal on her go in for a deep abcess operation near her stifle joint (the foal was sedated during the op) the mare was out for some time and because she was up side down on the op table for such a long time there were major complications with paralyses (sp) in the front opposite leg.

It was a terrible situation as she couldn't get up & the foal was trying to get to her for milk, my vets were very up set by the situation and done everything possible for her for the next 72 hours.

Needless to say i had to make the decision to put her to sleep because she was in so much distress. I brought the foal home and bottle fed him & got him on to the hard feed as soon as i could and thankfully some happy news came out of it, as he was fine.

The only thing i can suggest is to make sure your horse gets as much physio as possible as this will help bundles. My situation was much more severe as the operated leg had a drain on it and it kept tearing as she was trying to move, hence the decision we had to take.

I ahve experienced both outcomes.

1st was a 4 yr old pony who lay for 36 hrs after his op and had radial paralysis and massive oedema. His outcome was succesful and he has gone on to event at PN level.

The 2nd was a 16.2hh ID cross who went in for a tieback/hobday. Suffered radial paralysis, and subsequently foundered on the other front foot, and very sadly was PTS. Total tim from op to PTS was just over 48hrs.

Thanks for the information everyone, I am very sorry indeed to hear about the sad outcomes.
I am happy to report though that my friend's horse, a top team chaser with huge presence, is well and truly on the mend which is a big relief. Thanks again for the input.
