Do any of you take any herbal remedies before competitions or hacking? This mare I have had 3 years is a BIG spooker, she over jumps small logs etc. I seem to get my stomach in a knot which is silly due to many many many sponsored rides on my last mare. I have sustained many injuries on past horses and this mare over the years, I DON'T want the stupid nerves to make me into a jelly, it is more I worry about my back as it is damaged in 1977. Is there a herbal supplement anyone takes which helps.

My late mare we did many many training days and I trusted her with my life as she was so honest and we grew together. This mare is a stress head, selling her is not an option as I mentioned I will not let this rule my life. Main thing is the mare is behind in her training from previous owners so we are playing catch up.

TIA

We did 2 sponsored rides last year and some small jumps where i used to do bigger ones and want to do more this year if the flu enables us.

I struggle with anxiety in general. Before leaving the house at the moment I take 4 drops of Jacob Hooy CBD 5 % under the tongue. Tastes flippin foul, but it really, really helps. It's on offer at Holland and Barrett at the mo.

When I have a stressy time I use Kalms tablets from Boots and other chemists. It is just Valerian, but I find that it has a cumulative effect if you take them for a few days.

I’m currently popping a couple of drops of Bach’s Rescue Remedy under my tongue when riding my mare. Sometimes it appears to help and sometimes not 😏

I keep a bottle of Bach's remedy in the glove compartment of the lorry, tbh I'd rather it was gin but on occasions I take a few drops and try to kid myself that I've had a stiff drink. I have no idea if it helps but what I do find takes away that horrid fluttery feeling when I feel nervous is to take long deep breaths. If I can control my breathing it helps to control my nerves (I find closing my eyes helps but I think people must think I'm rather weird). TBH I think we all need strategies to cope with feeling nervous, in some ways the adrenaline helps us but not if we get flooded with it. I've been reading about this cannabis oil (CBD) and for a child of the 60's that does seem interesting!

Gin is herbal. Have you tried the mare on anything? Not saying that calmers are necessarily effective, but they can have a placebo effect on the rider.

I'm afraid that as I get older I cba with horses that worry me.
My mare is on cool core, gf20 and https://equifeast-shop.com/horse-supplements/horse-calmers/from equifeast, as we found she is sensitive to magnesium. I just came back from a restaurant in a long black coat and as yard light diod not come on she backed away from me wide eyed till i spoke. Some one has a lot to answer for from her past.

Thank you for the tips, I will go to healthfood shop tomorrow and see if i can pick any of these up to try and work my way through one, I think cost the mare is a stress head it rubs off on me, never used to be like this , i think its injury and her not a confident horse.

Not me personally, but a good friend takes rescue remedy before shows or we go out on a farm ride. You can get them in a sweetie form too.
I remember a couple of years ago we were headed out for the day and my friend was a quivering wreck- she had her little faithful tin of rescue remedy sweets and was popping them constantly (Im not sure what the dosage is!). Then her pony bogged off while she was tying to load him and her tin of sweets flew out of her pocket and scattered across the yard, in a wonderful array of colour.
I seemed to find it a lot funnier than she did! Although she did end up laughing herself in the end, after she had clamoured around gathering sweets up and picking bits of yard dust and horse poo off them.
She used the standard bottle with drops from then on!

I'm not a nervous rider, but I do get nervous before competitions. I usually have a bit of alcohol on hand to take the edge off...

My instructor was highly amused when she caught my dad giving me a shot of whiskey before I went into the ring at trailblazers as a teenager...;)

On a more serious note, rescue remedy and mindfulness worked really well for me when I was struggling with the late old faithful's much hotter and greener replacement. Mindfulness stopped me going down the pattern of comparing the two and getting anxious because I was fixating on the things that were more challenging with the newbie, and it kept me focused on actually managing the situation instead of sitting still worrying about it.
