I have one horse whom when i have a break off riding from (last rode him 10 days ago) due to having one on box rest, two others to look after and a really bad back for the past week. i get really nervous of him.

Why - with my others it does not bother me in the slighest - i just get on and go. With Mr Schoolmaster - who is a rather large and powerful beastie - i get really nervie - after a couple of days I am fine and love riding him again and then we get on really well.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like this - my negative head starts to tell me I am overhorsed, and to be honest - yes he is far to good a horse for me, but isnt that why you buy a schoolmaster?

I have just written something similar on another thread, but try to block negativities from your head. He is a schoolmaster and I imagine as this, he wont hurt you or do anything stupid. Get on him with a positive attitude and treat him as any other horse and enjoy it!

I have a similar problem. My horse was broken at 7 and is really good,no problems, its just me because before sending him off to be proffessionaly broken I got on him (didnt realise he didnt have good brakes) he bolted I fell off and have been wary ever since.I am just going to make myself get on him.Last time he was as good as gold.I think everyone has some fear.hidden.

Think positive. Have someone there if you really feel worried. Lunge for 5 mins first. Try to concentrate on something other than what he "might" do. ie, like working on keeping you leg back or elbows back etc. Works for me.

easy to say this, but its mind over matter. Tell yourself that you havent had a break and you rode him the day before and everythin was hunky dory. Plus lots of smiling and singing to keep your breathing regular and calm.

Good luck, you will have fab ride and will be back on cloud 9 in no time!

I do get the same sometimes. Haven't been on my new lad for just over a week due to him having his back done and will get on him over the next day or two but will be nervous as hell. With him being new and an ex racer will prob get someone else on first, Mainly as I badly broke my ankle in January so can't afford any accidents

I recently got back on my horse after last riding him a year ago, since when he and the others have been just lazing about in the field for various reasons. I was absolutely terrified, shaking like a leaf. I should have trusted him - he was as good as gold and didn't put a foot wrong. And yes, I am enjoying being back in the saddle again.

Mine hadn't been sat on for a year by anyone. I just brought him out of the field. I did wonder what I was doing being the first one to sit on him after that long, not being the greatest rider in the world. But my neighbour had very kindly offered me the use of her school and I thought, well, I've got no excuses left now, so gritted my teeth and did it. I sort of knew deep down he'd be ok, but my heart rate was still about triple what it should have been! Worth it though, because I felt I'd really achieved something.

A lady on my yard has a slightly (!) nutty TB , 17.2hh who she's not sat on for 2 years.

She then jumped on, and took it out for a hack - in the middle of a shoot.

There's fear, and then there's just stupid!

I am fine as soon as he walks, it is the feeling of anticipation and fear before i get on him. I have only come off him once - oh that was in good style with everyone and his dog watching (think it was one of the dogs that caused the 30mph bucking, swerving bronk attack lol), but when i get it wrong ie. i usually block him with the hands, when i am sending him forward he goes "up, down, buck, bronc, up" and then i ether stop and carry on, or we just carry one.

And when i have a back as sore as it is at the min, i really dont want Mr Schoolmaster giving me a telling off. ah well did not ride today, but booked the school for 6am in the morn - figure if i get out of bed, get to yard in zombie state, i will be on and riding before "fear" wakes up lol
