Hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on the NS starter and team up bits. Namely, what are the difference between the two?

I have a 9yr old super fussy TB with a fat tongue. Previously tried him in a thin verbindend but he didn't like that. Have been looking at getting a slightly fatter (milder) NS that's shaped to fit his tongue in without applying too much pressure and wondered if either them team up or starter may be the way forward?

Any advice much appreciated :)

From the Neue Schule website:

TEAM UP:
Develop the partnership with this gentle all purpose training bit. Ergonomically curved to encompass the tongue and align itself underneath the upper palate, giving very even gentle weight distribution. The NS Team Up alleviates mouth over activity and tongue evasions therefore promoting a softer more consistent contact. It encourages the horse to soften through the jaw relaxing and lengthening the neck. Beneficial for the short tense neck without causing the horse to lean. Reinforces the turning aid.

STARTER:
Make the first start the right start a€“ establish the basics. Promotes mouthing and acceptance. Good for lunging, long-reining and relaxed schooling. A gentle bit with tongue relief that encourages the horse to stretch the topline seeking forward and down into a soft consistent contact. The 14mm normally offers extra lift from the shoulder as opposed to thicker mouthpieces.

My horse sounds similar to yours and he preferred the team-up (hated the verbindend where my other horse loves it)

:) was leaning towards the team up as I thought the starter might literally be for horses just starting out.

Which thickness team up do you use for your horse? Thanks :)

When I contacted neue schule for suggestions for my tb with a very small mouth and fat tongue, they suggested a team up in the thinnest mouthpiece.

Before I got round to trying it, I tried a myler comfort snaffle and he went much better in that so never tried their recommendation.

I have a Myler comfort and he hates it. I really dont think he likes thin bits at all, such a fussy boy!

I have the 16mm, he's got a massive warmblood tongue and he still has enough room, he doesn't like really thin bits

Nor does mine. When I contacted NS they suggested the verbindend in a 16mm but he really hated the verbindend I tried hence thinking of the team up/ starter. I'll try get a 16mm team up and hope he likes it :). Also size wise, do the team up bits come up small like the verbindend? Unsure whether I'll need a 5.25" or 5.5"

Slight tangent here - but I was looking at these bits for my youngster the other day, and I was wondering how exactly a 14mm bit provided more lift through the shoulder? Am I just super thick - but I don't get how this works?
