I was recommended by the NS bitting services to try a turtle top universal on my TB after I get his wolf teeth removed (soon hopefully). I'm planning on borrowing one & also a Pelham turtle top one from a bit bank (I'd like to see if the Pelham would help with his outline - just a hunch as I was recommended the universal as the horse has control issues when he's in stressful situations), just to see if these do have a benefit. However, if these are the bit for my horse I've been looking for I have the issue that I cannot afford a £110 bit currently - horse is having vet out to sedate him & restart his overdue flu/ tet vacs, dentist removing teeth and doing filing and then I'm also having the saddle out to fit a saddle that I'm still yet to buy and give him a massage. So I'm not looking to splash out on a bit just yet.

My point is - is a lozenge similar to the turtle top bit link or is it too different? Is there similar cheaper bit to try?

The thing with the turtle top is that it's stiller in the mouth than a normal lozenge bit. Possibly worth seeing if you can borrow one for a couple of weeks, or hire one? If it doesn't help your horse then it will save you the money! Not sure what the second hand market is like, you might be able to pick one up slightly cheaper?

In terms of alternatives, maybe worth calling one of the bit bank type places that stocks a range of brands. Can't recommend any in particular I'm afraid as I have always had good bitting advice from my trainer, lucky girl that I am!

Thank you! Alrighty, that sounds like a good idea. It would only really be until I had slowly saved up to get one. All the same I'll wait until I have his wolf teeth removed and then I'll see about hiring them. I don't really have anyone to see about borrowing one, only about 3 liveries on my yard, one of which is my aunt, and the other is a semi-retired arthritic pony who's probably only ever had one bit, and the other is a girl that to be blunt, is clueless. (She walks over to me the other day - says do you like my new bit - it's a kimblewicke. Me: eerr that's a half hanging snaffle or baucher . . . Her: oh yeah well anyway which way does it go on? . . . She obviously really researched that new bit was right. T_T she wants a kimblewicke now. I told her straight it was too strong. I've told her all she needs is a Waterford snaffle - he just leans and runs through the bridle sometimes. Does she listen? Uh no.)

Your very lucky indeed! I don't have a trainer as such, for the past 6 years I worked on my pony who had trust issues, broke him in and produced him to become a happy hack and leisure horse. Now I have my TB and he is very different - not sure if I'm going to be able to self train him. Definitely considering a trainer lol.
