The above bits have a good write up and see loads of people recommend. Just wondered if anyone has tried an alternative similar as there seems other sweet iron / copper two ring gags for about £25 and what they thought.

I dont want to end up buying twice !! and already have a collection of bits! even if i hired with £10 hire and prob £6 postage not far off buying a cheaper one.

thanks in advance

thanks everyone

My friend has a tack shop and put on a demo day from the neue schule team she roped me in to make up the numbers...

I sat at the back like yeah yeah yeah heard it all before

I was given a bit to try... trooped off the the yard full of sceptisism....

However

How wrong was I?

Paddy loved it what a difference, totally recommend them to anyone now

Just remember your need 1/4 of a size bigger than your normal bit of 1/2 for their waterford equivelant.

I completely stand corrected.. just a pity they are so expensive

:D

I don't think you can make do with a cheaper alternative, I believe it is all to do with the metal compound that the bit mouthpiece is made from. I bought my first NS off ebay for about 1/2 the price of one new to see if it was any good - I have to say he loved it, and then his companion showed she too loved them when we put her in his bridle one day. I now have an extensive collection of NS bits. I really must get round to selling the old stainless steel ones.

I use NS bits and nothing else, I believe in investing in my horses bit.

We spend so much money on making sure saddles are correctly fitted and good quality, correct bridles, etc yet can spend a fraction on that cost on a bit. When things start going wrong in schooling we can wonder why the horse doesn't go nicely (as it were), work bettet kn ine rein than the other etc.

IME an 8.99 snaffle will not be as well made as an NS bit, it will unlikely be symmetrical and can be poorly made (not always, but ime the majority are uneven if you look at them closely).

With NS or any other specialised bit company, the price I'm paying isn't just for the end product but the time invested in the development, research, materials and quality control. In theiry all of that should produce a better end product. Anytime I've had a query with an NS bit it's been rectified.

Those are just my thoughts on why it's worth paying the money and thinking on it as an investment.

I haven't tried a NS bit, but have used the Cotswold Sport tongue-saver bits and the cob loves them - a fraction of the price, but still gentle and roomy for his tongue. I only stopped using mine as it was a little small and I ended up with an ebay bargain Myler that he also loves - and is the right size! I second getting a slightly larger size in these styles - I think not only where the bit ring is on the mouthpiece, but the curve of the mouthpiece when sitting nicely in the mouth seems to make it a bit 'shorter' if that makes sense?

NS may be fantastic, but if he is quite happy in the cheaper version then that money can go towards something else...

We have a collection of NS bits and one of them being the Universal. I honestly wouldnt buy anything else unless it didnt suit my horse. My new Ex-racer isnt a fan of the NS universal so hes in one of the early training bits. They are expensive but so worth it, they're really quite durable as well as mine havent marked too much.
