Sorry, it's long :o

I'm thinking of trying a NS Verbindend on my gelding. I jump him (indoors/outdoor arena) in a Jeffries Centre Revolver (lozenge) 3-ring Dutch gag - but I don't like to school him in this as he only needs it when he gets excited really. So, I want to be able to school him on the flat in a snaffle so I can resort to stronger bits when they're needed rather than them becoming the norm when he's only rising 6.

At the moment, I usually school him in an eggbutt french link snaffle, or a 14mm NS Tranz-Angled Lozenge Beval (Wilkie) bit, but he can get really strong, to the point where I can't canter him easily, even after a good hour of trotting beforehand. He isn't consistent to the contact (tends to poke his nose)- he either doesn't take the contact forward properly and settle into it or he leans on it - probably my riding, but he needs a new bit anyway. I am aware that my riding is the core of any problems we have, but I want to try to get him to respect the bit more as he ultimately gets too excited in canter.

I think that a Waterford would be too strong, so was thinking more along the lines of a 12mm NS Verbindend with 55mm rings, so that if he gets along with it, it could also be used as a weymouth bridoon. Or a 70mm 16mm. I'm not sure that a Team-up wouldn't be better - thoughts?

Hi, presume you use 2 reins on the gag?

I know that technically you're supposed to, but no, I don't. It's impractical when SJing (I can use 2 reins though, thanks to 2 seasons hunting in double reins when I was 9), especially on my pony - I tried to once, but the snaffle rein was held so loosely that there was no contact because I only need the gag action. When jumping outside, he has to go in a 4-ring Dutch gag on the bottom hole. I don't particularly see the problem with it TBH.

I have nothing against the OP by the way and am not trying to say anything against her :), it's just that some people are quick to jump on others for doing things like this, when really, it's quite usual. So any thoughts on the Verbindend?
