Hello,

Currently working my boy in a Wilkie snaffle (loop ring snaffle) with a losenge in the middle - it's borrowed from my YO and it's a Neue schule bit. I'm looking him to get him one of these and a loose ring snaffle with a losenege in the middle as well but Neue schule bits are expensive!! Are they really that much better when I'm buying snaffles and if so why?

Pony is 5, broken this year and has started schooling seriously in the last couple of months - he has come on in leaps and bounds in the last 3 weeks (maybe the jockey is finally getting the idea!) and I don't want to disturb anything, but on the other hand I also don't really want to spend £100 on 2 bits!!

Any ideas for NS alternatives?

Cheers

Ooh, thank you - that looks great. I might get the loose ring snaffle version of that. I feel the Wilkie may be slightly more difficult to get hold of - maybe I'll chance upon a bargin at HOYS on Sunday!!

Cheers

I'm a bit fan of the NS bits, had the loose ring, just got one with full cheeks now for a bit more steerage on my boy!

I'm about to put the other one on Ebay, is a 5 and half width loose ring, with the lozenge, so pm if interested, its about a year old, typical condition!

I love my nueu schule bits i think i have all of them now !!! but then i do have 7 horses from babies upwards so i need them !!

they are good and definitely not as expensive as sprenger x

I think that it depends on the horse, not much use to you I know :( 2 horses love them and go really well in them, one won't move in them, but he is tricky and will only move in a happy mouth bit, he is a bit "special" ;)

I've had alot of youngsters go really well in them, but then they haven't gone any different when iv switched to standard french links. I'd suggest trying to find someone you can borrow one off!!

hi
i asked a similar question a few weeks ago and got some great advise :)

i ended up buying a NS vanderbend (sp :o ) and it has helped a lot, i also had a look in his mouth with it in taking notice of the fact that some horses have more tounge space than others (as mentioned by someone who answered ) and you would think it was made for him.

i really liked the way it sat and he has been going much better although i have lost some steering but silly me bought the one with smaller rings by mistake  but i will be buying the one with bigger rings when he comes back into work as i'm sure it will solve that prob

if yours goes well in the NS that you have borrowed ,i'd be getting the same rather than changing into something else that might put your schooling back ,have a look on ebay or do you really need two snaffles ?
can you not find one that suits and just use the same bit ,rather than changing it

Thanks guys, some very positive responses.

Angelish - he's currently in the Wilkie / Bevel / Loop ring (whatever the correct term is) snaffle with the losenge and is going lovely. I had some problems with him fixing, hanging on to the right rein and generally ignoring me. Unfortunately as he's the first one I've broken in his behaviour got a bit more established than is ideal (combined with the fact that he is a fell pony so can be quite tank-like!). I've had more lessons and my instructor gave him a very rigerous schooling session which was a bit of a sharp shock. he was in a bubble bit (2 ring gag) for 2 weeks to give me some steering and brakes out hacking and in the school and to break the cycle we'd got into. Since then we've downgraded to the Wilkie and he's just improved so much it's amazing. I don't think we're ready to downgrade to a loose ring snaffle yet but that is the aim so we can do a dressage test. I would like to keep a Wilkie in my armoury though as when we hit our first ridden showing classes next year I may require that little extra reminder it gives!!

your not doing bad ,mines in a pelham for anything other than dressage ;) because the big brute leans and can take hold and drag me out through his shoulders , nice :)
he is far too big for me really but same as you had him since a baby arr couldn't possibly sell him and get a nice little TB

try and get a lend of a NS vanderbend (not sure of spelling but something like that )
i found it just gives me a little more help than a normal snaffle but is still dressage legal ,might save you having to buy two bits ,worth a try

I have a NS starter on my 3 yr old and she does really well in it. really makes them mouth and soft. They are a lot cheaper than a KK Sprenger. having been sceptical before i would say they are worth it and picked mine up off H and H forum.

yes def worth the money

be aware you may need to get one a 1/4 inch bigger than usual size as i've found them to come up a bit small (sorry if this has already been mentioned not read through all replies)
