As title really, anyone had experience of this with their horse for lameness. Would appreciate any stories/experiences of this as it may become an option for my mare following a tear in her DDFT. Thanks in advance.
I had an old horse with navicular who had a neurectomy. He did fine with it until the nerves regenerated! His nerves were very branched which the vet felt may have been a response to the navicular. I could not jump him because they cannot feel where their feet are but he was a sound hack (very forward) for at least 2 years after the op.
It was a last resort when shoeing etc did no releive his discomfort and avoided long term bute use for a while.
Thanks for that dianeholmes, I had read that the nerves can re-generate and as you say its a last resort. Hopefully Izzy will be able to go out in the field in 2 weeks and time will tell then whether she stays sound. Shes had her 2nd injection into the navicular bursar 1 wk ago and vet coming to check her on 5th May. The tendon appears to be healing and I know its a long job, she just went lame after the injection wore off and vet has said that if it happens again then neurectomy is the last option. Needless to say, Ive ridden her this week and its obvious shes more comfortable now. Time will tell.
