Colleague looked after my three year old pug for the weekend and mentioned that he was continuously pestering her bitches. Despite being told off countless times by both the bitches and my colleague, it's almost seems like he's in the zone and you just cannot snap him out of it. He doesn't mount them but is very sniffy around their vulva, often licking that area and really digging his head under their bum to get to it. He was neutered around eight months old and could have been neutered earlier but OH was adamant it was unfair (had a long argument with him!) I partly think it's a habit that needs breaking, as he used to go out with a dog walker about two years ago that allowed him to do it with other bitches on walks, but I'm wondering if there might be anything underlying. As far as I remember, he did not have a retained testicle and as he is the only dog in the home, I often don't see this behaviour. Out on walks, he approaches bitches normally and never pesters them like he did with my work colleague's dogs. He will generally walk away from them so I'm not sure if it's a truly ingrained habit. Work friend feels he's got a lot of testosterone and behaves almost like an entire male! She also mentioned he also does it with male dogs as well when they're cocking their legs (he likes to have a sniff) but again, I've never seen this behaviour, even out on walks. She's wondering if he's very dominant in the home.

I'm thinking of using a remote spray collar to break the habit but I'm wondering if I should get the vet to look at him since he's exhibiting quite high sexual behaviour (he'll even start humping the air when he's sniffing the bitches!)

Thanks :)

It might be that he is just a bit rude and the consequences for the behaviour were not strong enough, maybe they felt like they could not be too harsh on someone else's dog. If my young one tries to be rude with other dogs I really get after him.
The fact that he was getting as far as he was indicates there was no attempt to remove, isolate or even threaten him with a raised voice/growling, etc (not advocating dog beating!!!)
Even tying a light line to his collar and physically removing him and not allowing him to approach the females unbidden or something like that.

He shouldn't have been (after the first instance) allowed to get as far with that behaviour as he did and if they stand there and let him go that far and reward himself, why would he not try again?

He maybe never does it with you, because you may be firmer with him and would not tolerate it.

A spray collar might work but the reward he gets from pestering females might be higher than the discomfort of getting a spray in the face, it's something for us humans to step in and sort out IMO!

Thanks CaveCanem. He sounded awful and I felt so embarassed! He usually tries it on with my mother in law's dogs but is never that persistent, but then I never let him get that far because you're right, if he gets what he wants, he's already rewarded himself.

May need to spend a day round my friend's to see how bad he is because he certainly needs to learn to behave around bitches!

Maybe one of the bitches has an underling bladder infection or they need their anal glands doing ? I know when my boy does this to my JR she needs to see the vet to get her glands done. But my boy does get told off for it and removed if is consistent. :)

That's interesting you said that horseperson because he was persistent with only one of the bitches, not the other two. I'll mention it to my friend as it could be something underlying.

I would also as above suggested like horseperson think there could be an underlying issue with the bitches (there is obs some hightened smell) it could be infection or anal glands as suggested, I have a bitch here now with an anal gland abscess and all the dogs are sniffing her like mad (or they woud if like CC suggests) I was not on their case, they sharp scarper when they see me and I don't let her out without me for the toilet as it's not fair on her, but obs the area smells well fishy. Obs she is a fluffy coated breed also so any discharge lingers. Castrated dogs can still display interest esp if they are not around dogs to often. The key is indeed to (reprimand) so he knows their is a consiquence for pester.

I have an uncastrated male in and he is being driven to distraction wanting to sniff, lick and bonk all in sundry (he is frustrated as hell) but thats his owners daft fault:rolleyes:. The funniest part was him trying it on with my whippet dog (oushhh, that was a bad move):D

My (neutered) boy tries it on frequently with my 2 bitches. He gets told off and the girls tell him off..he is a little hen pecked so I do wonder with him, if its an attempt to regain some dominance at times..
