Recently, much to his disgust, my world has not revolved around Oscar. So... he has thrown himself up against the wall overnight, got stuck and then bashed his head around for good measure while getting up.

Got a phonecall from the yard this morning to let me know so I went down and cleaned it up as he didn't even want them to look at it!
He is feeling rather sorry for himself and has a cracking headache, poor boy.

Why why why does it always have to be his face????? There isn't a mark on him anywhere else!

From experience I'd say that facial wounds often look much worse than they are - and Twiglet's has healed with barely a scar. Recommend aloe vera!
 
Oscar, you CLOT! That really does look horrible, I would have panicked seeing that especially given how close it is to his eye.

Can i ask, how are you treating it? Did you call the vet, or is it something you'd ordinarily handle yourself? Would Oscar stay in or out having done that?
 
trundle, I picked the remaining woodchips/ hay out of it and then carefully bathed it with lukewarm salty water and that is all I will do for a while until it starts to dry up, oh and he'll have a bute for a couple of days to help with the swelling.
Now that it is clean I'm quite happy with how it looks, although I have had a chat with my vet. He is happy for me to continue as I am unless I feel something isn't right and he will come down.
He has gone out with a fly mask on, but it is a bit old fashioned and made of very sturdy material so it sits away from his eye. The grooms will check it a couple of times throughout the day and then I will clean it up again later.

He does tend to bash his head (not normally quite as bad as this though) and they do normally heal well. So fingers crossed!

My lad did this and his wound was less dramatic than Oscar's. I must've been really unlucky as he ended up with 2 separate fractures, 1 to the top of his eye orbit and the second (and more serious) to his cheek bone.
12 weeks later and £3K+ in vets fees, he was fine

Initially, he didn't look too bad, it was only 2 weeks later when his whole head swelled

Hope yours are just superficial wounds

Thanks Twiglet - I've used aloe vera with good results too! I must dig it back out!
 
Poor boy. It looks really nasty to me and that it need stitches, i'd call the vet without hesitation.
Could he be getting cast in his stable i've seen very similar injuries to this caused through the horse getting cast?
 
He did get cast! He has permanent anti cast withers though, so it's quite strange for him to get in that position - only ever gotten cast about twice before in 11 years.

There isn't really anything to stitch, he left the other parts of skin up the wall...........
