My 2 yr-old Sec D has just developed an angry looking patch underneath his mane. It starts at the base of his mane, about half-way up his neck. Literally one day it was not there and the next a greasy balded rubbed patch appeared, a few inches long and same deep. There was a tiny blob of blood in it, so thought he might have been bitten by something and then rubbed it in irritation. Put sudocreme on it and checked next morning..looked the same, put more sudocreme on it then today checked it and the skin of the patch now looks thick and crusty.
Does this sound like the beginnings of the dreaded sweet itch? Or some kind of allergic reaction to a bite?
Any suggestions???
Thanks in advance!

Strangely enough, we've a 2 yo Section D at our yard who has just recently started itching and rubbing - first his face, then his mane. Last night he was an animal demented, and the owners rang the vet for advice. The vet said they had seen quite a lot of this happening recently - sweetitch caused by a new midge to the country.

My pony mare gets mild sweet itch, which I've practically eliminated by feeding brewers yeast. I know we're almst at the end of the season now and unfortunately it takes a couple of weeks to take effect, but I would get some down him/her pronto. (Marmite has the same effect, to acquire it urgently - I used to put it in a sandwich with banana, her favourite treat).

I'm a bit confused by this patch now...it's gone to crusty scab stage and appears to be healing with no further rubbing or itching..so don't know whether it was just a bite that he reacted to badly..or what...spoke to vet as am treating him for mild conjunctivitis at the mo and he did seem to think it sounded like sweetitch...monitoring it closely!

my mare has this it started out the blue her mane was red sore patches that went crusty like psoriasis her mane falls out she was so itchy rubbing on anything , had to have a course of injections. even to this day in the winter her mane falls out as the bacteria attack the hair root and it falls out so easily so she always has 1 inch mane in a certain spot and it stretches out to 8 inches along her neck now . I have to wash her mane in hibi scrub to keep clean .

she is like an old man now one inch hair growing on near side and baby fluff 1cm long on the top of her neck

hmmm ok...ringing vet in the am but am still a bit confused as have not noticed him doing any frenzied rubbing or even much itching at all. The other morning I did see he had rubbed a bit of scurf to the surface on the other side of his mane...but nothing to speak of...his mane is very scurfy at the base but he has no actual rubbed mane hair patches...when I spoke to the vet the other day he felt there was no connection between this and his mild conjunctivitis but on the other hand he did also wonder whether the conjunctivitis was actually an allergic reaction...sorry rambling round in circles with this...horses always give you something to think about eh??
