I have today just finished building my new arena. Fence up and its sort of ready to ride.

I will be getting a teacher in when the weather improves and lambing finished. but in the mean time what should i do in it?
I have so looked forward to this being finished and it has nearly killed me doing it in this weather, now its finished i dont know where to start!

i want to do some jumps and dressage, we currently hack out 3-4 times a weeks but i want to ride everyday.

I am a beginner. i came back to riding last july, can work my wb in 3 paces sort of. i want to tidy ourselves up a bit and learn to control him through ,y body not just hauling him around by the mouth.
hes strong and fidgity but a good lad.

what would you start with?

Ha Ha, I feel your pain!!! When I first got my arena it felt kind of hard to grow into it!

I would start by just going into it with your horse. You could do some ground work, as in make sure your horse leads and stops off a light aid to the headcollar. You could lunge. You could hop on and have a walk round. You could go for a trot, have a canter, make shapes in the new surface. You can buy some markers, or just use fence posts and see if you can make transitions at a named place.

There, that is a start!

Errrr I'd stand and stare at it for a few weeks!!!

Then perhaps I may get on and walk around once just to put some hoof prints in it!.....then I wouldn't touch it again ;)

But no! Have fun! Just get use to riding in it...very different from grass. Get some jumps and have a small jump! Get use to corners and shapes, being disciplined over markers etc!

Its Flexiride so no need to worry about spoiling the look!

I bought poles and jumps before it was even started! couldnt wait!

but yes i must get dressage markers, good.
