Having just twigged that from this weekend you can't enter a BD prelim on an unregistered horse anymore, and having entered just such a horse for two prelims next week, I filled in the form for associate horse membership and faxed it across to BD last night.

Full marks to BD who emailed me the horse's reg number first thing this morning. Very good service!

So just a reminder to anyone else in the same boat, and a reassurance that it's neither complicated nor a hassle to do.

Gambird maybe you could help me understand BD a bit more since I'm completely new to it (shameface)

Do I have to be a full member to ride in prelim etc or just an associate, and can the horse just be an associate member or does it have to be a full member?

Want to do some AF stuff over the winter and haven't got a CLUE.

Not sure about the jockey as I've been a BD member for the last few years anyway. I *think* the owner has to be a member though (or in my case I've put me down as the owner to save hassle ;)).

The horse now HAS to be an associate member (which is free) as they've finally decided to record prelim results. This is fabulous for me as I can create a BD record for young/green horses which I'm selling without having to pay to register the horse.

Actually this link does say that riders need to be members.

So I can compete at Prelim without paying for him, but have to pay for me / owner (think I will do as you do though ;))

Thats good! gives us a bit time to potter about but still compete AF. Thanks :)

That will be useful for people bringing on to sell numerous horses. Very good idea!

It will be - could compete them at Prelim for free before but no record so no point. Needed to register and compete at Nov/above to get a record, which wasn't going to happen!

You definitely used to be able to compete without registering the rider or owner with BD (I definitely did this 4/5 years ago - I don't think it's changed?). Though I think there might be restrictions on which sections of classes you can enter.

You did used to be able to compete prelim without the rider being a member. I will be a member anyway as my older horse will be registered. Will be doing the associate membership for my riding 4 year old. Such a good idea to start publishing results for prelim :)

From BD: "From the 1 December 2012 we will begin to record the results for Preliminary Qualifiers, Young Horse and Music classes on the database.

This will allow us to automate the generation of qualifications and give you the opportunity to view your results on the website.

In order to achieve this we have introduced a new free 'Associate Horse Registration' which is mandatory for horses competing in the above classes who are not already registered with us."

They will not be recording the results from non qualifying prelims, if I understand the above correctly. It seems that you only need to register for the above classes and not non qualifying prelims.

Gosh that's complicated if it's right! I can't qualify for anything at prelim anyway as my rider group is too high. I'd rather have the horse registered than not though. They didn't used to have prelim Q's anyway, just Q and non-Q sections of each prelim class so that bit's changed too.

*sits down next to Jenni hoping someone can explain it all in blonde-proof terms* :D

So basically, owner must join, & horses at associate level to compete BD prelim...... If you go up to novice do the horses need to be registered properly?

I found this a little confusing so I looked at the Rulebook and I think this explains the situation clearly.

"Rule 25. Preliminary classes
The non‐qualifying section of Preliminary Classes is open to anyone, member or nonmember, registered or non‐registered horse, horse not to have gained more than 49 BD points. Those competing in the non‐qualifying section do not qualify for the Winter or
Summer Regional Championships. Results from non‐qualifying sections are not recorded.

The qualifying section of Preliminary Classes is restricted to those who are eligible to
qualify for the Summer and Winter Regional Championships, i.e. members of BD, who are groups 7 or 8, riding registered or associate registered horses with no more than BD 49 points.

Preliminary qualifying sections classes carry “Prelim points” which are used for
qualification purposes only and do not affect the horses grade. Full Horse registration
will be required for those competing at the Summer and Winter Regional Championships
and Area Festivals"

So you don't have to be a member and neither does your horse unless you want to be in Qualifying classes or have your points recorded. :)
