Look at the current bit in his mouth, there should be room for a finger either side, or 1/4" between the rings and his mouth both sides. If it's too big, measure the mouthpiece of the bit to find out the current size. Most bits come in 1/2" increments, some in 1/4" sizes, so you should be able to find one that will fit properly without any trouble :)

Pull the bit out one side of his mouth until the opposite bit ring sits where it should be if the bit wasn't too large. The amount that hangs out on the side that you're pulling it is the length that the bit should be smaller. Most bits are measured in centimeters.

Not doubting you, but is this more of an Ireland/Europe thing? Every bit I've ever bought has been measured in inches, or sometimes has both, so curious if this is because I'm in the UK or if I just buy from old fashioned tack shops ??

Dunno, but it's easy enough to convert. The breed of horse I have, and the style of riding we do, I know that either a 12.5 or a 13.5cm bit will fit.
