I am in the process of shopping my horse from his old food to Cushcare condition because of his age and Cushings he needs food with maxi 10% starch/sugar but one that also keeps the weight on him (25yr old TB). I do not live in the UK and need to allow 6 weeks between ordering and actually getting the bags of food. Has anyone used this for long enough to get an idea if it really does all they say? For his weight the amount that he should get according to their feeding guide is less weight wise than he is getting now and he is always hungry!!! He weighs about 530 kgs (weight tape). I would really appreciate any input

Dear Danda

I had one horse on my yard on it with cushings very dusty and looking at it we could not see what made it different from feeding a good multi purpose supplement with a digestive yeast or TopSpec/ Blue chip normal balancer with low sugar chop like Dengie Hi-Fi lite and some unmolased speedy beet. I do know people who have used Saracen Shape Up for horses with Cushings and liked it but I don't know much about it, but it did smell nice and they did eat it well.

Thanks for your input, I have 5 bags of it so hope it is ok, don't want to keep changing him around, I must say it does not look very appetizing, hope someone has some positive things to say!

My 27 year old welsh pony has cushings and I changed onto this feed at the end of last year/beginning of January. It is the first feed that I have tried that he really likes, and will happily eat it with any supplements I want him to have.

He currently looks really good - he has kept his weight on, although he will never be fat. I don't know if he looks good because of the feed, or because of the supplements that he would never eat before! But finding this feed has definitely improved his condition in some way.

I've been using it since Christmas and I think it is much better that the previous muddled together feed that I was using. It makes life much simpler and the only things I'm adding are fast fibre and unmolassed hi-fi. My oldies one with confirmed cushings and the other (older one) unconfirmed have come through the winter pretty well and for once are shedding their coats like they used to years ago. Like MarilynM they also seem to love it (I feed it as a mash with the fast fibre) and lick their buckets clean. Which for H, who can be v. fussy, is something of an achievement.

Many thanks for your reply it gives me some hope as at the moment he looks terrible, really thin with hip bones and backbone very visible and long shaggy hair, I am still in the process of changing from old feed to this new one and he seems to be eating it ok. Keeping fingers crossed!

danda, you don't say if he is on prascend.I would suggest you ask Andrea on the ems and ppid fb group, linked to the laminitis site, for her help she is a mountain of informed and proven knowledge on cushings. And she lives in France I believe.

I'm afraid this is not working, he started out by eating it (mix of old and new) and every day he is eating less of it, today he left well over half. I contacted D&H helpline and tried what they suggested but it has not helped. He is loosing weight rapidly. I am going on Tuesday to get some D&H 16 plus to mix with the cushcare and see if he eats that. It is no use having the perfect food if he won't eat it!. Am quite worried now but hoping for an improvement.

I have used in the past black current juice to get Problim horses to eat. It has worked for me 8/10.
It was somthing a rep from I think Saracen told me when she came to a Stud I was working on years ago.Worth a go to get your chap eating.
