My heart breaks for the foal who recently lost its mother in a hit & run incident, pictured in the news section web page

I appreciate accidents can happen, but how anyone can hit a horse and leave it for dead without calling the authorites is beyond me. I mean - you can hardly hit a horse with so much impact that you mortally wound it and not realise, can you? I can only suspect the people who leave these poor animals injured must be a drink driver / stolen vehicle/ speeding or involved in something that makes them not want to get involved with the Police or authorities.

Lets hope that if the Law catches up with them, they will be dealt with severly, but I suspect they will get away lightly.

i doubt very much if anyone will "get away with it" though as the Verderers take hit and runs VERY seriously indeed and a reward of up to £1000 is offered to those giving evidence to bring about a conviction....see below...

There is a reward of up to £1,000 payable to anyone who provides information that leads to the successful conviction of a driver responsible for failing to report an accident with a commoners’ animal. Several payments have been made under the scheme and the rules are available on request from the Verderers’ Office.

Anyone with information is requested to contact the Verderers’ Office on 023 8028 2052, or the Police on 0845 045 4545. The incident reference number is 44090240490.
 
Thats very sad, but unfortunately very common. I think there is a list of the road deaths of animals in the NF on the NFED website, or certainly a link to, and it is terribly high.

I grew up by the forest, and animals of all sorts graze alongside the roads and frequently wander in front of cars, yet drivers still speed. A lot of the forest roads are straight and open and a lot of over taking takes place, I dont think these hit and runs are ever going to stop.
 
If you go onto the NFED website, www.nfed.co.uk , home page and scroll down there is a list of accidents and it is a tragedy.

I became aware of the amount of ponies and foals killed some time ago and asked on here for suggestions on how perhaps to minimise these deaths but suggestions were rather thin on the ground.

All we can hope is that the majority of those killed do not suffer. It is upsetting to think of those left injured, often horifically, until someone comes along to help them or pts.
