New Forest Ponies

I have a New Forest pony, a 13.2hh chestnut mare. She is 13yo now and I've had her since she was 8 months old, 2 days after she came off the forest. I do showing with her :)

Speak to the New Forest Pony and Cattle Society. You only have to look at the New Forest Pony Enthusiasts Club To see how well they do at RC events. They have all the info you would need. Foresters are very versatile and can turn their hooves to anything! Cracking ponies! If I could fit my stupidly long legs around one, I would have another one without a shadow of a doubt!

I have a few! Benji, I've had the longest, he's 22 now and I had him as a yearling. He's a full up 14.2 and a good all rounder. Grown men ride them to give you an idea of height/weight. A general saying is a stone a hand.

They have fantastic temperaments and very versatile. We also had one on loan for my son, she was one of the smallest I've known at 113cm. I can't sing their praises enough, but then I am totally biased living close to them in their natural habitat and breeding a couple. Any more questions I'll try to answer them for you.

I am sorry for those who keep seeing the same question from me but I am an anorack, what's the ponies's registered name?

I have had 3 New Foresters.

My first was about 13hh and carried me (An adult) hunting for many years. During his hunting days he often took the Huntsman's horse when the huntsman went into cover including jumping tiger traps etc.

My second on was 13.2hh and competed in Endurance for 15 years including competing at the Golden Horse Shoe 100 miles. He carried me for many miles throughout his Endurance career. He also did Show Jumping and Hunter Trials all with me riding him.

My third one was a lovely little 12.3hh mare that was a wonderful companion to my friends horse who is partially sighted.

I loved my Foresters.

My first pony was a NF who l had for 12 years he was a fab allrounder & was my pony of a lifetime l could trust him with my life. I have fond memories of competing at our local RC shows often having to jump against horse 2 or 3 hands taller than him & their owners thinking we had no chance. But what with him being a pony he could turn tighter. He also had a heck of a turn of hoof once in front galloping he wouldn't let anything else past him. He was such a character that when l had to put him down l was devastated.

I didn't think l'd ever own another NF but 11 years ago we bought another off the forest to keep my ISH company & she was as trainable as my old pony was. We then got another NF three years ago from the same breeder & she's a mischief maker. They are a fantastic breed but to me they are underated. To me you can't find a pony that will give you more loyalty than a NF l love all our native ponies but the NF pony has a special place in my heart. I hope you have many hours of fun with your NF

Best ponies in the world that can do a bit of everything.. with an attitude and ego to match! I do love a good fforester!

This!

Mine is just a darling. She is feisty, tries her heart out, is safe as houses and loves a cuddle. She came 2nd and 3rd in her first ever TREC competition today and she was only backed a year ago and done light hacking since.

I've had 2.

The first was a 14h bright orange beast. He was the true love of my life and ill never ever be able to feel the same way about a horse as I did about him. He was the safest yet the fizziest horse ive ever ridden, we did everything together and it broke my heart when he went.

My current boy is also about 14h, lovely if slightly pushy on the ground, sensible to ride with a serious jump. He reminds me of my old boy (above) in some ways, but although I love him I still can't feel quite the same.

Foresters are the best!

Have a look on face book THE NORTHERN NEW FOREST PONY SUPPORTERS GROUP some nice pictures on that site .

I have a NF x cob. Fantastic pony and I love her to bits. Obsessed with food - like no other pony I've ever known. Lovely to ride for five years old - she acts a lot older. On the ground she can be bolshy and strong and she is just so opinionated! I'd have another any day!

There's someone on here with two - Laura I think? , can't remember her full poster name but I enjoy reading about her fun and games with her two! I have a native/cob cross and everyone says the native part is New Forest - from his head and look so I'm happy to have a bit of a NF!

I have one he is a bit quirky, super intelligent but also can be quite sensitive and he is very very greedy and loves his food, managing his weight it a challenge.

I have done most things with him, when he is good he is a superstar when he is naughty or gets frightened he can be quite challenging.

Lovely gentle nature though and a great all rounder.

What height and weight are you, if you don't mind my asking? I ask because we have a 13h NF for the children and I do ride her but feel a little self conscious and worry about what I can and cannot do with her. She doesn't seem to be bothered at all, however.

If the photos work, here is my Newfy, 8yrs old, 13.2...Im and 5'9/5'10. I may look silly on him but im not bothered, he does everything I want and he seems to cope with me ok.

He's lovely! What's his registered name?

He's not registered unfortunately as his sire was unregistered. All I know is his sires name was Archer, his mum is registered as Glenbeech Lemon Sweetie Pie, both off the forest. My boy is the spitting image of his mum but a little bigger and darker (my friend owns her). I got the little pickle as a project but three years later I still have him. He is a big horse in a little body, or so he thinks!

I rode a 12.2 bright bay NF into my 20's when she was retired. She was a year older than me. I am only 5'2" and at the time only about 7.5 stone, so we fitted each other perfectly. I would give anything to have another NF. She was almost bomb proof. Her thing was storm drains when she would randomly spook, a different one each time. I think it was her way of making sure I was awake!

I'm 5ft 5in and at the time were about 10st But to compete at international level we needed to carry 11st 11lbs. He never had a problem and was very forward going. Both my geldings could clear 4ft and keep going all day.

They will carry a man all day out on the forest roundups.
