I desperately need a new hat, i would like an air flow type, but which one do i get? I dont want to spend huge amounts of money, so any recommendations?
I have looked in Robinsons catalogue, what are their "cheaper" versions like. any good??.....and if i wanted to go to a show, do they do covers for them??

I was in my friends tack shop yesterday and the Gatehouse rep was there. She had the Air rider hat. It looked good and has a removable peak so you can add a silk.

An answer OMG an ANSWER!!! Thank you very much!
*toddles off in trepidation to find out prices!*..... :D

Which ever one fits you the best.....my sister has always wanted a champion air flo but when we went to get it the person in the shop wasnt happy with how it fit and wouldnt sell it to us.....tried on a Dublin onex and it fit perfect and we could see what he was on about.

I like the Tipperary Driving Helmet for all round protection, it is lightweight and cool in summer, and gives good protection round the back of the neck and round the front of the head.
It is a bit more expensive than the black velvet "Champion" which is PAS and other things [£30] but has a rigid peak, which I consider to be dangerous. It also moves when I throw my head back.
Common sense and a personal fitting is essential.

I just bought the Charles Owen JR8 (Kiddy version of the GR8) really impressed and supposed to be better than some of the air cooled ones.

I have a Troxel vented hat....I was happt to use it when riding my trusty old mare..but I was never happy with it, feels very flimsy and has the dial system.

See its been so long since i bought a new hat.....what is wrong with the dial system??

which ever one you chose make sure it isn't just the standard EN1384, even with a kitemark it is the BASIC standard. you need at least a PAS015 if not a SNELL

I am a medic at equine shows and amazed that so many people even semi professionals that do not know the difference or that the kitemark is a sign of regular quality testing NOT a safety test

Friend of mine who backs horses always had PAS skull caps until someone bought her a vented one that was only 1384 she fell off, what she consider a small fall and couldn't believe how much more of a headache she had than she had ever had before. hat went in the bin and back to skull caps or any PAS

dial system....its like they have on cycling helmets....you put the hat on and turn the dial to tighten it.

At the time it suited me...as I rode once in a blue moon on my semi retired mare who I consider bombproof....soon as she retired I realised I'd need something better!.

best to go somewhere local with a good rep in fitting, mine mentioned the PAS safety as one of the hats I liked didn't have it (they could have had a lot more money out of me!).

You need to try on various makes because you know may your hat size doen't mean that the hat will be a good fit. Some peoples heads are round & some are oval so an oval hat will feel too tight on a round head etc. :)

Sorry to slightly hijack, but Im also looking for a new helmet (for SJ and DR). I tried on a KEP, and it felt very different so lightweight and high cut at the front. Ive been looking at the safety standards though as I want a well protecting helmet but am a little confused. The KEP has a BSEN1384 which I know safety wise isnt enough on its own, but it also has the american SEI ASTM F1163.04a - Im not entirely sure what this means standards wise is it equiv to our PAS015 or not pls? :o. thanks.
