Have recently moved to a new yard and have had my TB shod by a farrier there. I asked to make sure the same kind of shoes where put on this time as she has rubbish feet and previous shoes have bruised her soles, so shoes where made to vets advice after discussions with previous farrier.

I could not get out of work to be there, but my friend from the yard was there to bring her in. Anyway, got down later to be told she must have overreach boots on in the field and these are her shoes - opinions please!

Here are the fronts, back overhang slightly more!

This is what happened to her boots last night! (back boot)

HI,

I am not an expert, but the fit of those shoes lookes appalling to me. Have you tried your horse barefoot with a qualified barefoot trimmer (yes they do exist).

What on earth is going on there? Is she pigeon toed? I've seen pigeon toed horses with slight overhang but not as much as in the 2nd picture.

My old horse got shod in the same way- I'm guessing your horse doesn't have the straightest legs, has slightly small feet and is inclined to brush- especially when schooling?

The way your farrier has shod is to maximise the weight bearing area that your horse has at his disposal (which minimises tendon and ligament strain) and will assist his confirmation so eventually actually stop brushing :)

The hoof overhanging the front of the back shoes is actually entirely logical (once you have got over the odd look :p ) as very little weight goes through the toe (it goes through the heel, so best to have extra support there) and tit also helps prevent overreaching and assists breakover - honest :)

Yes, small feet and inclined to brush, but was more concerned about her actually managing to rip the brushing boots - do not want her damaging herself as she is always coming in with knocks and bangs as it is.

Thanks for you advice x

Shoes that are longer at the heel like that do help support the heel and set back at the toe helps breakover. It is generally a good thing!

tbh its hard to tell from photos but I can't really see a problem.

One of my horses wear over reach boots 24/7 to prevent him pulling shoes off that are set back, for this purpose.

I would get some harder wearing boots for turnout maybe - the standard woof wear ones with more hard wearing bit where they brush.
