New Horse/ 21 year old mare

Hi Kaye, you're a very inexperienced rider and owner, who from the above thread has only been having riding lessons for 3 or 4 months, I think?

Please consult a good instructor about riding your mare, not a forum of strangers who don't know you or her.

She needs a check over by a vet and a cushings test (for the top line loss and because of her age) before you think about riding her.

Is that her stable? It isn't very wide (5½ concrete blocks is usually well under 9 feet) and unless it is very long I would say it's not big enough for a horse of her years, who is likely to be a bit stiff, to be in for very long.

Please make sure you have plenty of knowledgeable help in these early months of horse owning. Good luck. .

Well, the first thing I would do is a general health check done on her, before deciding your next steps. 21 is an old horse, and unless she’s been in consistent work all of her life I’m not sure I’d be making any plans to ride her. You’d obviously need to have a saddle professionally fitted to her.

First of all I have a mentor. Who’s horses live in the same block. 2nd of all her stall is 10 x 12 and I am lucky I have a big community of lots of help

Good. Please ask your mentor about riding her. I think you need to measure that stable. 5 standard blocks would be 7ft6. In my opinion, a horse of her size and her advanced years should not be in a box of less than 12 feet in any direction. I realise and I'm sorry that I'm raining on the parade of you buying a new horse a few days ago, but we owe it to oldies in particular to give them the very best of care.

Why did your help/comunity let you buy a horse without a vetting? A vetting would have picked up possible cataracts.

Why did you buy a horse that you are only now questioning if you are able to ride her/too big or heavy to ride? Surely anyone experienced would establish the basics of the horse being able to carry the/a rider prior to purchase.

Was this a private sale or from a dealer?

A saddle has to be fitted, even more so with an elderly horse. In fact I wouldn't be considering a saddle or riding a horse with no topline.

Experienced help should advise regarding getting a vet and a suitable conditioning plan for keeping an elderly out of work horse

Bought a 21yr old and thinks she might have cataracts.

Had lami 2yrs ago and something about feet not done/shoeing? No topline and been out of work.

Poster was 5ft4, X weight and would she be OK to ride said horse along with the weight of a 17.5" X brand of saddle

Thats the gist of what I remember.

Answer to first replies was that she has experienced help and an experienced community around her ?

I wasn't critizing your pics or how she looks!!!! It is impossible from those dark pictures of a rugged horse to make any helpful replies to your questions. Leaving thread now it's obviously going to be one of 'those'?
