A new livery arrived at our yard today. She is a beautiful and friendly seeming hanoverian mare, quite young I believe and has a fairly novicey owner who's just bought her (and admits the horse is too good for her!) She came straight from the dealers yard she's been at. The poor girl manages to scrape her back leg in the horsebox, then when she gets out we see she's covered in ringworm, bites and is very underweight. Unlike a normal horse IMO when we put her in her box rather than looking round wondering where she was she just gazed out highly listlessly and barely moved for ages, looking rather like she'd been doped though I wasn't sure if prehaps it was her extreme malnourishment making her lethargic. The vet came out a few hours later to look at the ringworm and said that fortunately it was in the late stages so no longer infective (horses owner hadn't even noticed so hadn't told us!). The mare also has very strange looking eyes, the ridges above her eyes look very large and swollen, making her eyes partially close as a result, she has the expression of being either very tired or aabout to cry! Someone said this is associated with the ringworm, is it? Has anyone come across this before?
Anyway vet gave her some antibiotics and some medication, hopefully she'll feel better soon just feel very sorry for her as in a sorry state. Her owner seems a nice enough lady and wants to have lots of lessons to get her riding up to her horse's standard. I hope it works out for them both.

Give her a month on good grass, feed and some tlc and hopefully she'll be a different horse. Mine was malnourished when I bought him and came to the yard looking very sad and depressed and he just stood there, not having the energy to worry and he had the face of an old man (he's 5)! After a month he changed dramatically and is now quite a stunner!

Oh I do hope she picks up soon, although the owner is a novice hopefully she cares and will ask lots of questions to get this mare looking and feeling her best.

Thanks everyone, she is already looking brighter although still very lethargic. Vet says she can go out tomorrow. Poor girl, makes you wonder what happens to them at dealers yards for them to get into this sort of state.

Not only Dealers Yards, mine was from a private home, owned by a teenager who didn't really have a clue or the money to look after him

Let's hope the one at your yard is now going to be well looked after and she picks up soon.
