Hello, I've just bought a horse from a friend who got him from her friend. He had the kissing spine operation and apparently has stomach ulcers. Am i entitled to his vet reports? Obviously need them for insurance purposes.

You can ask to have a copy of the treatment reports but this is not valid for insurance purposes as it was not done while in your ownership, assuming that you bought without a vetting, your insurance will exclude anything relating to kissing spines and ulcers.
You will need to declare these issues when taking out insurance.

No as I asked the same question of a seller who wouldnt let me see the vetting she had(I then didnt trust her as I took the view if she had nothing to hide) but I do appreciate a vetting is a "moment in time". She paid for it and why should she show me....I thought it was a bit mean etc

However when I purchased my last horse the owner had nothing to hide and she gave permission for the vet to give me a computerised printout of his past history. Genuine seller.

I am glad I was suspicious as I then found out the seller who wouldnt let me see was a right shark!

But it seems as if you were fully aware and if in doubt I would have got it vetted.

Good luck

I've had him for over a year but just looked after and rode him so my friend sorted out all the insurance but she just had basic I believe. I know everything about him and his back etc but feel a bit rude asking his previous owner for his reports from the operation which was over two years ago.

The vet has to have permission from the person that had him then before releasing history it passing it on to another vet as ownership gas changed hands.

Also watch the insurance you may be better taking his policy over rather than getting a new one as they may exclude more if you swap. Just question thoroughly and read the small print.
