Just as it says really, its been 20 years since I last had to do this (my old boy had to be put to sleep 16 months ago), so I'm a bit rusty to say the least.
Should I try to keep as close as possible to his routine now? Should I leave it a few days before I do anything with him riding wise, and just make friends with him for now at ground level?
So excited, but feel quite sick at the moment as well!
Any advise would be welcome x

How exciting! It would depend on what his temperment and experience is like. I'd probably just let him settle in somewhere safe and secure that is to his best preference (ie box or paddock/yard) and just stick to handling on the ground for today. If he is nice to handle, perhaps an in hand walk around to meet everyone and to get his bearings would be a nice idea. Also gives you both time to get to know each other! I can't say enough for grooming too! Really good opportunity to work with the horse and watch closely for any mannerisms/quirks that may be there.

Best of luck, just remember to relax and enjoy the day!

Thanks Lyle, he is just purely for pleasure, he is a bit bigger than I'm used to but I'm only small and more forward going, I know common sense will take over when I get him home, its nice to have a bit of reassurance though!

luck you - how exciting! :D

i guess it really depends on your horse - mine was quite stressed after traveling for a long time so he was put in his new box in isolation and i spoiled him rotten with lots of grooming and some treats. we went for a nice calm walk and he was turned out indoors alone to let off some steam before he met the rest of the herd.

I kept his routine to start with then altered it gradually over 3 months to bring him onto the same routine as the rest of the liveries.

good luck!

I know he's been out in the field all day today and it will be about an hours journey for him to get here.
Should I turn him out tomorrow? If I do, how do you cope watching whilst he introduces himself to the others, I'm petrified he'll get kicked.
I normally keep mine at home but his is coming to a livery yard near my home so I have a bit of company to ride out with until I get a bit more confident.

I could ask about that, would be a good idea.
Thanks for the advice, after having horses for 25 years you would think I wouldn't be so paranoid!!
Off to the stables now to make sure everything is perfect for him.
