Hi my new 13 year old irish draught x gelding is coming tomorrow, he will be coming about 15 miles to get from his current home to his new one with me.

Would you advise he goes straight into his stable for a bit and then out to meet the herd or straight out to them?

I was planning to put him in his stable for a bit and then give him a small amount to eat and then turn him out until I'm there the next day, does this seem acceptable?

Any advice appreciated, thanks

I'd put him out in a fenced off area adjacent to the herd and let them all get to know each other so that you have a chance to watch for any untoward behaviour, rather than putting him in his stable.

I agree - i'd turn out next to the them for a few days to get toknow each other, then maybe turnout with one before goign out with them all depending on how many you have.

I also wouldnt give them a feed before turning them out together - if they're hungry they'll be hopefully more worried about eating than messing about with the other horses!

Hope it goes well :)

I would keep in his stable for a couple of days. Does your yard not have a new horse worming/quarantine policy? Ours always stay in at least 48 hours to be wormed and are monitored for for signs of any ill health. If all ok then they are turned out in a paddock next to the horses that will be their field mates for at least 2/3 days or longer until they don't seem bothered with each other.

Spooky! I was going to post a very similar question when I saw this thread :)

I'm bringing my two boys (who get on very well) from their livery yard to my new stables and paddock in a couple of weeks and am not sure whether to stable them for the first night or just turn them out. The weather won't be an issue as it (should) still be very mild here.

Either way I won't sleep..should I pitch a tent in the field or bed down in the spare stable??? :o
