right well i came home from the auction with my new nag. A 14 year old gelding. He promptly threw my other half off in spectaculer fashion. We now know he has a sore back. But he does a very weird thing with his back legs when they are brushed. When you brush down them his tail starts twitching and the lower part of his legs almost shake. Could it be linked to his back? Has any one seen anything similar?

Is he ticklish maybe, just a thought or just not used to the feel of anyone brusging his legs.. Did you get him vetted ? What happened when you picked his feet up at the auction or when you ran your hands down his legs. ?

hmm shivers could be an option. Although his foot never leaves the floor. Its very hard to explain. edit to add. He is ok picking his feet up

what happens to his head, eyes and ears and tail? if his tail gets tighter to him bum and he is watching you out of the corner of his eye - i would bet he has had a bad experience either being gelded or something else. you need to observe his body language.

No he doesn't clamp his tail down at all he just swishes it around a lot, it is worse on one side. The opposite side to his sore back.

It isn't as bad just using my hand but a brush makes it worse.

It is almost like he moves his weight off that leg then stands square again and keeps doing that. Although as i said yesterday he doesn't lift his foot off the floor at all.

And this only happens below his hocks. Any where else he is fine, i can groom his tail His tummy ect , no problem.
