This is quite hard to explain but... some mornings I get him in from the field, tie him up and go to pick out his front feet. I pick the first one up and he bends right down and puts all his weight on the leg I'm picking up and groans. Does this make sense? My old horse did it a few times - its a bit like he's stretching. Could he be stretching or is he doing something else? He is ok after about the 3rd time of you trying to pick up his feet.

He is also awful at having his back feet done and when you first pick them up he kicks out at you. Again, he is ok on about the third attempt.

Any ideas?

This is tony's new trick. For some reason (which he doesn't want to share) he's decided his right front foot can't be held up. Last month it was his left hind. He's that kind of horse.

For him it's an evasion trick. He's too polite (or possibly scared

) to snatch it away, so he collapes on it until you have to let go. Sadly for him I'm a meany and hold on to it and he ends up falling over. Seems to be working as he didn't do it again

proberly a daft question, but did u have him vetted?

im not asking cause yr daft, but it could be worth givign the vet a call and asking if the horse done it on the vetting,

a few horses ive know that have done this have been doing it due to back/neck/muscle problems.

if he has a bit of tightness some where it could be a reaction to that, you can always try a few carrot stretches to each side before lifting a foot.

if your sure he is being naughty then id personally give him a slap on the sholder and tell him to deal with it.

Mine picks up her back right, lifts it really high then hops to her left until she hits a wall or something. I usually let it go and let her balance herself, then after a few more attempts she stands fine. Sometimes she holds it fine, but as soon as I get the hoof pick near it she starts hopping, which suggested that something was hurting, but farrier has been out and checked, nothing there, she's just being weird

alot of horses do it to avoid you, if he is new then he might just be testig you for a while. i agree with the obove if he aint hurting or anything id start showing him whos boss.

Mine used to pick them up first try but then slam them down 2 seconds later, got my OH to give him polos when he picked his feet up now he does not do it any more. If it's not muscle porb then try doing that.
Good luck with it.
