My new pony should be arriving in the next few weeks, un clipped cob mare, 5 years old. What items do I need to buy? So far I have the following

- 2 haynets
- 2 water buckets
- saddlecloth
- headcollar and Leadrope
- whip
- part grooming kit
- Massive first aid kit

She'll be going into livery and I'm pretty sure all barrows etc are supplied. So what else would you count as essential? That I haven't already got?

Some sort of cooler rug, these are so handy as a 'just in case'

a shedding blade for moulting time

A decent hoof dressing/balm

Another leadrope!

fly spray

Feed bins, spoon for mixing feeds, mucking out equipment incl wheelbarrow, large trunk for storage, little knife thingie for opening hay, scrubbing brush for scrubbing buckets, tack cleaning kit, fly sheet, elec tape and posts (depending on grazing arrangements), hi-viz

You don't mention a bridle & saddle, I presume you'll be wanting to ride?

Spare lead rope, spare saddle cloth (one being used & one in the wash), hoof pick, feed buckets (probably 2). Your cob may not need rugs but I'd consider a fly mask, with ears to stop the flies & midges driving her mad. You may need brushing boots? Seriously consider knee boots becaiuse if a horse stumbles to its knees when out hacking on roads the injury can be extremely serious. Don't go out & buy loads of first aid stuff as you'll end up with stuff you'll never use. Chat to your vet & he'll tell you what you need & to be honest it's not a vast amount. Don't bother with 'purple spray' as the stuff you get in tack shops isn't the same as the vets have.

Over the months you'll find out what you need but haven't got but if you start with the basics you can always build on it. Good Luck & enjoy your pony.

Thanks for all your ideas! I already have some large plastic boxes, and then I have a smaller one with my first aid kit in, I will pop to the saddlery in a couple of days and get the following...
- another saddlecloth
- Leadrope
- feed buckets
- feed bucket covers
- cooler rug
- shampoo and mane & tail spray (getting this on offer)
- fly spray
- fly mask
- brushing boots
- knee boots
- equine America hoof balm (my shettie has this and it's very good!)
- tack cleaning stuff
- hi viz

Make sure you have your chosen numnah with you when the saddle is being fitted and definitely have a spare one!

Second the view of don't get to much stuff before hand, you will accumulate over time anyway.

Essentials for me would be a couple of hoof picks (always seem to go walkies) and at least one spare lead rope. Once she's arrived and you can measure her then I would also get her a good cooler rug as they are so versatile, it's the rug type I use the most!

Oooo yes! Some spare hoof picks is a very good idea!! I already have one Numnah, so I think I'll get another one by that make (cottage craft) and the same style and size, then we should be all good to go! I'm very thankful of all of you helping me decide the essentials, if I had it my way, essentials would have been things like 4 colours of rug, but all the same type!!

Set up a savings account called 'horse' and a small direct debit in to it. This is horse emergency fund and it will quietly grow in the background and be there to help if you need it.
