I got my new loan horse 3 weeks ago, he was fine for the first 10 days and then he got all wheals on his neck and belly, I've got the vet out to him and hes got 10ml of dex which took the lumps down completly after hours but they kept coming back so he got two more injections of dex in the days following but they kept retuening so hes now in 7 tabs of clarityn a day (anti histemines) and it seems to be working ever so slightly, I cant find anything unusal in his field that he could have ate and my only explianeation is the grass were i live must be different to where he came from. Appart from the lumps he is in great form and not at all bothered, they are not sore or itchy and he seems happy out. Don't worry i have contacted and told his owners everything and they are happy to leave him with me and have consented to all treatment i have given him. I would have him carted home straight away only he doesnt seem bothered by there wheals at all (i think their wheals but feel free to correct me) it seems that they are purely cosmitic, however if they do start bothering him or get worse he will be going straight home. The lumps come and go very quickly often in a matter of hours. He is on no feed only grass at he moment to rule any other food causing it.

Has anyone had a horse with this before and can you offer me some advice please?

Oooer, my mare has a lot of lumps on her at the moment, maybe there are some hideous biting things about. Is it only one side? Could he have rolled/slept on nettles or something?

Very very lovely face by the way.

Its on both sides but only on his neck and belly nowhere else on him at all, thats what seems odd to me, Im trying to gt fly spray on to him at the moment but hes terrified of the spray (hes a big scaredie cat) and i can only get it on with a cloth, any suggestions how to get it on to him with out him thinking hes getting killed by me :p

One of my horses has horrendous bites/lumps all over his neck and shoulders, hair is coming off and bloody underneath can only think he has been attacked by biting flies, got into something or eaten something, but they are not bothering him so havent done anything than put sudocreme on the worst ones to stop further fly worry. OP i wouldnt worry unduly they will probably go down.

Agree with sports horse. Just fly bites. if they dont bother him dont worry too much. :) I cant abide fly rugs so if they get bitten and dont mind I dont do anythinga bout it. If its not bothering them- its not bothering me! :)

Just be aware if he gets any under the saddle area, they might rub when u ride but if like you say he seems fine. He probably is!
xx

Could well be flies but mine came out like this (and worse!)after being wormed with Panacur 5 day . They went down on their own(appeared on 3rd day of 5day course-stopped course on vet advice when lumps appeared). Has horse had any new feeds/wormer/forage etc that could've prompted an allergic
reaction? Is horse known to be sensitive skinned-to flies/shampoo/coat shine spray etc etc? Hope you get to bottom of it! In meantime,I'd stick a fly rug on to rule the fly-bite-reaction possibility out:)

Ps it's called urticaria (or hives). Nothing to worry about if they go down eventually&you often may never know why it occurred! Did owners not say whether he's had anything like this before? Sometimes can be due to getting hot &sweaty in the field too-this humid weather not great:-/

They do look like bites especially as you say they come and go.

If you have the patience rub each bite with white vinegar - its great for neutralising bites - also brillient for yourself too.

Is your flyspray in a can or in a pump bottle. I use mine from a pump spray bottle - the sort that you use for spraying weedkiller - you pump it up and it will spray continuously with little noise - much to my friends amazement I sing Very loudly (and badly) while spraying to hide the noise.

A fly or even a summer sheet with a neck rug would help reduce the bites.

Could it be something he is rolling in?
I don't think it looks like horse bites.

Had a horse on the yard who came out in bumps like that when he was clipped, they eventually narrowed it down to a clipper oil allergy.
