When I first started looking, after sharing horses, my instructor told me not to look at anything under 10 years old.
He also told me not to get something with really big hooves as they'd wreck the land ; )

hey, so im buying my first horse!
ive been full loaning this past year so i am quite prepared (i hope 🤞🏼!!) but just wondered if anyone had any tips of what to get!

he will be on diy livery btw.

thanks xxxx
Wow, how exciting.
That's such a huge question ! You might need to give us some clues, like what are you picturing you'd do together, does he need to live in or out, roughly what size will he need to be, etc

Definitely don't buy a youngster or "project", or anything that needs to be re-trained to do what you want him to. For a first horse you need something that is already doing what you want to do. And he needs to be in-work doing it right now, avoid anything "sold from the field" or "has done xyz with previous owner but not with us".

Err on the side of under-horsing yourself. You can pep up a 'boring' horse a lot more easily than trying to make an over-exciting horse less scarey. You can have a huge amount of fun with a quiet little horse that you trust.
Buy the one you will actually enjoy owning. Don't fall into the trap of buying the one you will look good on, or that other people will be impressed by. I meet so many people who are having a miserable time because they are trying not to admit they are frightened of their horse.

Involve someone who knows you well and has seen you ride, such as your instructor, or a more experienced person on your yard.
