Hi everyone,

Tomorrow is my first day with my new share horse. This is my first real experience of looking after a horse as I've only previously had riding lessons with very little contact on the ground.

I want to build up the trust between myself and the horse for a few days before I ride and I was wondering if anyone had any tips.

Thanks!

spend plenty of time just grooming him and being around him, so he gets to know you. whenever my friend gets a new horse, she leaves one of her jumpers in with him in his stable overnight so he gets used to her smell. she swears by it! be sure to talk to him lots, regardless if people think you're crazy

don't forget to relax and enjoy yourself though, if you're tense then he will get tense too! be sure to update us all plenty also!

Spend time grooming the horse, and just being with him. I would also say that perhaps you should not leave riding so long, as it makes no difference to them whether you ride or not - I rode my new horse the day he arrived.

Just make any time you spend with him nice for him, and enjoy!!

Thanks

Shes staying at her current yard as I'm only a sharer. Shes been absoutely lovely the few times I've been to visit. Last week I went down and spent the day chatting to her over her stable door and gave her a few carrots.

I'll post some piccies after I've been down tomorrow! Don't think I'm going to be able to sleep tonight I'm so excited!

I agree with whats been said, spend lots of time, grooming, and touching, and the horse wil respond for sure...
they all love massives of attention!!!!!!!!!

hope all is going well. as others have said and personally I find hacking out alone (if safe) quite good bonding as its just you and the horse and can chat away all you like!
