New Horse, New Yard- Advice please

I have recently sold my 2 horses which I have had for years and have had a six month gap, while I moved across the country, I was not expecting to be able to keep a horse with my new job, but it now seems that I can.

I now have found a new horse and a yard and really I just want to make the transition as smooth and as kind as possible.

Does anyone have any tips?

The horse I have bought is a 15.2 warmblood glelding aged 6 1/2 with reasonable experience for his age.

If he is imported I think you will find he will be very chilled and would sell his soul for a net of hay, so I don't think you would have any problems, they seem to give them very little hay on the continent for some reason. Even if he is not imported I can't really see any problems, warmbloods in my experience are usually very laid back. The worst thing you can do with any horse is to pander to its every whim, and talk to it like a baby as it will be expecting something awful is about to happen to it and will start getting anxious and stressed. Just treat it firm but fair and try not to let everyone on the yard coo to it over the stable door, just give it chance to settle and let it have a bit of peace and quiet until it has had chance to assess the situation it finds itself in. Good luck, I am sure it will be an easy transition for all concerned and if anything like my WB will be asleep half an hour after arriving at his new home.
 
I agree with Applecart - warmbloods in my experience are ruled by their appetite!
BTW congratulations on your new horse, hope you have lots of fun together!

all i would say is chill out and enjoy your new horse as he will settle in no probs. just let him be a horse as much as you can with plenty of turnout if possible (i know it can be hard at this time of year) but horses do tend to settle in better if they are getting out and he will then get to know his new friends and good luck but wee need to see lots of pictures of new horse

He arrived last Friday, and is sooo chilled its unreal. Very underweight but actually looks like hes smiling all the time!
I put him out this morning in pitch black for the first time (was going to stay with him then realised I could not see him LOL) so came back half hour later as it got light and as I called for him he came cantering across the field and stopped dead at my feet.....I then played run, chase and stop for the next half hour (with him chasing me!) other horses were a little confused but I was over the moon!!! Safe to say at this point that we should be fine despite the normal ups and downs.....thanks for all your help.xxx
